AniManga Clash! Yu-Gi-Oh! Season Zero Episode 14: An Explosion Makes for the Worst Date/Manga Chapter 45

ANIMANGACLASHYGOEP14TITLE

Plot: Now that she realizes that there’s ‘another Yugi’, Anzu brings Yugi to an amusement park to try and lure out the darker more mysterious Yugi.

Breakdown: Oh dear lord, this is going to be a trial. Don’t let that plot fool you. Just because it seems like slice-of-life fodder doesn’t mean we don’t still have insanity. And it definitely doesn’t mean that someone’s not a complete mean-spirited twat today.

Sidetracking a bit, I really don’t understand the wonky way in which they adapted these chapters. I can’t review chapter 27, where I left off on the manga chronologically, yet because it’s adapted in episode 22, which I am no where near, yet I have to keep skipping to the near end of the manga when I’m barely to the midway point of the anime.

Anyhoo, let’s get into it.

In the manga, we merely start with an image of a newspaper explaining the latest in a string of bombings caused by the Card Bomber. He’s called such because he announces his bombings through playing cards. In the anime, we actually see the inspector from the Burger World episode investigating the threat before the bomb goes off. He’s called by the bomber who gives him a ‘quiz’ to determine where the bomb is in the department store.

The quiz is ‘Big or small (upper or lower)? The department store has 12 floors, so is the bomb lower than the sixth floor or above the seventh?’ The inspector guesses ‘small’ and the bomb goes off because it was on the ninth floor.

I really don’t get this quiz. It’s a complete guessing game considering it’s a 50/50 shot. No other clues were given.

Cut to school where Yugi is explaining the serial bombings to Jonouchi, Honda and Anzu. In the manga, Yugi was reading the story in the paper as he and Anzu were already walking to the amusement park.

In the anime, Anzu recaps that Yugi has the same wound on his hand as the person who saved her in the previous episode. She doesn’t readily believe that this Yugi is the same Yugi who saved her, though. He must be another Yugi. Because it’s more logical to think that there’s some Yugi clone or alternate Yugi personality instead of believing Yugi could just be brave and save his friend.

Anzu grabs Yugi’s paper because she sees an ad for an amusement park. She invites Yugi to go with her on Sunday. Jonouchi, Honda and Miho eavesdrop on their conversation and assume that Yugi and Anzu are dating behind their backs. They decide to go to the amusement park on Sunday as well in order to spy on them. We get a pretty funny daydream where Jonouchi imagines Anzu and Yugi on a roller coaster. Anzu is proudly standing up with her arms crossed as it descends and Yugi’s screaming and grabbing her leg.

Anyway, there’s no respectful way of segueing into this observation, so look at Anzu’s boobs in this bottom left panel.

ANIMANGACLASHYGOEP14SCREEN1

They’re so pointy, I’m convinced she stole the Millennium puzzle for a second and hid it in her bra.

Back with matching both versions, Yugi and Anzu arrive at the park the next day. Yugi stutters through nearly asking Anzu if this is a date, but she interrupts him by telling him they need to buy entrance tickets. When Yugi goes to the gate to get two student tickets, the woman assumes he needs one student ticket and one child ticket. Yugi pouts and asks what she means by that. She explains to Yugi, whom she calls ‘Boy’ in both versions, that student tickets are for high schoolers not elementary school students. Yugi gets understandably upset and angrily explains to her that, despite his appearance, he’s a high school student.

I’d get pissed too, but the writers of the manga, Season Zero and the 2000 anime really do their best to make Yugi look like a little kid. I get that that’s his thing, all innocent and pure and whatnot, but do they have to make him look like he’s half his age? As much as I’d think it was cute to see Yugi and Anzu together, to some degree (*coughYugiandJonouchiforevercough*) it’s hard to ship them because he looks too much like a little kid. Keep in mind, Yugi is supposed to be 16…..

In the manga, we cut to them getting ready to go on the water slide. In the anime, we get an added scene where the bomber is giving the inspector a hint as to his next target.

‘Big or small? Will the temperature at 11 o’clock be more or less than 28 degrees (Celsius)? The answer will be revealed on the 11 o’clock weather report.’

Back at the park, in the manga, Yugi and Anzu are next seen on the water slide where we get probably the most shameless instance of fanservice I’ve ever seen in Yu-Gi-Oh. They go down the water slide and….well….pretty much this entire page.

I swear she went up two cup sizes since the title page.

Also, I can’t believe I have to say these words, but look at Yugi between Anzu’s legs. He’s looks like a toddler.

In the anime, we also get pretty much this same fanservice shot of Anzu in her bikini, but she’s dry. Yugi is meeting with Anzu after they get changed into their bathing suits and that is the first shot of her that he sees.

Oh and Jonouchi, Honda and Miho are stalking them throughout all of this in the anime. I probably won’t bother noting it from here on unless something important happens.

If you’re wondering if we get the waterslide scene in the anime, we do, but it’s not so ridiculously drawn as it is here.

ANIMANGACLASHYGOEP14SCREEN2

Anyway, look at Yugi’s stupid face.

ANIMANGACLASHYGOEP14SCREEN3

This is actually mirrored from the manga, but how hilarious does he look?

As they’re sunbathing, it looks like Yami takes over Yugi for a split second and Anzu notices. Either that or she’s hallucinating. I’d probably bank on the latter because Yami typically never emerges unless there’s something serious going on. Also, uhm…he kinda can’t emerge unless Yugi’s wearing the Puzzle…….Where’s your Puzzle, Yugi? You were wearing it when you came in. I know they probably wouldn’t allow him to wear that clunky chunk of metal at a water park, safety hazards and whatnot, but where did he put it? Don’t tell me he left it in one of those lockers they give you for your shoes and clothes. My dude’s gonna get so robbed.

He changes back when some kid shoots a water pistol in his face, causing Yugi to chase after him. Anzu also believes it was her imagination, but I’m not entirely sure. It’s unclear.

Anzu’s all about that hot Yami action, so she decides to force the ‘other’ Yugi to appear.

This is so manipulative. I know that Anzu is legitimately Yugi’s friend, but she’s taking advantage of his feelings to get closer to his sexy alter-ego.

Also, considering that Anzu doesn’t know about the actual separate spirit within the Puzzle….What does Anzu believe the ‘other’ Yugi actually is? Because, in real life, the only real explanation for someone having two personalities is a mental health issue….Which means that Anzu looks even worse in hindsight because, to anyone else in this universe, she’d look like she was not only taking advantage of a friend’s feelings but also like she’s taking advantage of someone with a mental health problem. And trying to force out the other identities of another person, especially for the sake of lusting over him, sounds like flatout abuse.

I’m just trying to imagine Anzu attempting to explain to Jonouchi, Honda or even Miho that her intentions with this date were to force out Yugi’s ‘other’ personality because she wants to get into that Yugi’s pants.

In the manga, some oiled up beach dude comes up to Anzu and asks if she wants to hang out with him. Anzu, seeing this as an opportunity to get the ‘other’ Yugi to defend her, screams out that he’s a pervert. Yugi does take notice, but so does a large group of people around who start beating the shit out of the guy.

And Anzu just grabs Yugi and walks away before anyone asks any questions. What the hell, Anzu?! You got some poor dude beaten up all because you’re horny and then you just bounce? The guy was kinda sleazy, sure, but he didn’t deserve to get the crap kicked out of him all because he asked if she wanted to hang out.

What I think is especially funny is, in the anime, Jonouchi hits on some women in basically the exact same manner as this guy, but gets shut down pretty badly and we’re meant to sympathize with him. So, basically, this dude was no worse than Jonouchi with girls, but it’s supposed to be okay that he gets beaten up. Okay.

In the anime, Anzu’s first approach to this was to pretend she was drowning in the pool. Yugi rushes out to save her, but, funnily enough, she’s saved by two guys in the pool, and Yugi actually ends up legitimately nearly drowning and needs to be saved by another guy. (Where are the lifeguards?)

Manga!Anzu: “After all that, I haven’t seen him.” All that what? You tried one thing.

In the anime, we catch up with the police after Anzu’s failed attempt to draw out Yami. The weather report states that it’s now 28.2 degrees, meaning the answer to the ‘quiz’ was ‘big.’

There are so many variables here. He never mentioned what specific weather report he wanted them to listen to/watch, and considering the threshold was merely a couple of decimal points, I’d say that it could have varied quite a lot between reporters depending on where they’re getting their readings and what equipment they were using. It also means the bomber had no plan for this one since he didn’t know the answer either. This was purely another guessing game. There is no way to know the answers to these ‘quizzes.’

I’m guessing since the inspector starts getting upset that he answered ‘small.’ Not that it matters anyway because the bomber calls up and says it’d be boring if they ended the game there, so he’ll give them another quiz. Thanks for wasting our time, man.

The bomber basically just straight out tells them that his next target is the largest pool in the city, which just so happens to be located at the amusement park where Yugi and Anzu are hanging out.

Hey, just thought I’d tell you, a little late, sorry, but the anime does recreate the pervert scene beat by beat at this point only with two major changes. 1) Unlike Manga!Anzu, SeasonZero!Anzu specifically says the pervert touched her in a nasty place. And 2) Remember how I compared the manga pervert to Jonouchi a bit ago?……Yeah, the ‘pervert’ in the anime is Jonouchi. She spotted him following them so she allowed him to accidentally bump into them, giving her the opportunity to act like she was getting groped so Yugi would Yami up and save her.

ANIMANGACLASHYGOEP14SCREEN4

Luckily, Jonouchi didn’t get beaten up by the guys who apprehended him, but seriously Anzu you should be smart enough to realize that was Jonouchi. His only ‘disguise’ was sunglasses….

I love how no one calls her out on the fact that she clearly lied about a sexual assault here. Jonouchi asks why she did that, but we get no answer before cutting away to a later shot of them walking together. She could have just told Yugi that some creepy guy was following them (Although, he’d definitely recognize Jonouchi….) or yelled out ‘creepy stalker!’ or something. But nope. Instead, she accused him of touching her in her bathing suit area. That type of accusation can land a guy in prison, Anzu. And you almost did that your good friend all because, again, you’re horny and manipulative.

As Jonouchi, Yugi and Anzu walk together, Jonouchi reveals that Honda and Miho are there too. Anzu asks why he was secretly following them and Jonouchi denies the accusation. To help tamper tensions, Yugi suggests that they all play together now since they’re together for the day. Anzu suggests….playing tag? And specifically just with her and Yugi? I get what she’s doing, I do, but even Yugi should be confused.

First off, who the hell goes to an amusement park to play tag?

Second, what 16-year-olds go to an amusement park to play tag?

Third, why would you suggest playing two player tag as a response to Yugi saying they should all do something together?

God, Anzu, your plans are so transparent and stupid.

The next part is changed in a very important way, and it’s one of the key reasons why the manga version upsets me so much. Yes, the pervert scene wasn’t the worst of Anzu in this chapter.

In the manga, Yugi and Anzu spot the police in the park and wonder why they’re there. An announcement over the PA system informs them that a dangerous item has been brought to the park and that everyone needs to evacuate immediately. Yugi thinks it’s the Card Bomber, and Anzu responds by saying “A bomber, eh?….What a thrill! This could get interesting!” And then she thinks to herself ‘This is the perfect chance to see the other Yugi.’

Jesus.

Christ.

Anzu.

People could get killed or lose limbs and your only thought is ‘Oh boy, I can use this terrorist attack to see sexy Yugi-kun!?’ Whatever drops of respect I still had for you just went down the drain into the most putrid sewer system. What the fuck is wrong with you, Anzu?

In order to enact her plan, she sneaks away from Yugi and takes a ride on the Ferris wheel. Why the Ferris wheel is still taking passengers and operating when the police are evacuating the place in response to a bomb threat, I have no clue.

Manga!Anzu: “I hope Yugi gets worried! If he does, I might meet that stranger…The other Yugi-kun….”

Back with the anime, Anzu just heads off to the Ferris wheel because she’s upset.

Anime!Anzu: “Stupid Yugi. I finally had him alone….” Yes, stupid Yugi for being unable to control our friends and suggesting we all spend the day together when I never made it clear or official that this was a date.

A bomb explodes on the Ferris wheel, but not in the car that Anzu is riding, car three. It’s only here where they finally announce that there’s a bomb in the park and they need to evacuate. Anzu reacts to the news of a bomb with shock and horror, like a normal person.

Everyone stampedes out, forcing Jonouchi and Honda with them. Yugi is left behind. He informs the police that Anzu is on the Ferris wheel. Another officer explains that there are actually three cars with people in them – one with Anzu, another with a mother and her child and yet another with a mysterious shadowed person who is totally not the bomber.

SPOILER ALERT: HE IS.

And what a stupid-ass bomber to place bombs on the very Ferris wheel on which he’s riding. Even if there isn’t one in his car, he can still easily cause the Ferris wheel to topple over and kill him.

Yami emerges, which makes Anzu ecstatic. (Congratulations, Anzu. Do you think you’ll have enough time to pleasure yourself before your car explodes?) and takes over the game for the police, who just allow it because Yami proclaims he’s really good at card games….O…kay…

Shadow Game…..Kinda

In the manga, the ‘Shadow Game’ (it’s not really a Shadow Game in this chapter, and it’s not initially in the episode, but let’s just call it that) is a game called Clock Solitaire. A deck of 52 cards (excluding the joker) is used to distribute the face-down cards into twelve piles of four cards each. The piles are arranged like the points of a clock, each representing one number that matches the numbers on the Ferris wheel. A thirteenth pile of four cards is created in the middle to represent car thirteen.

The player, Yami, will randomly choose to flip a card from a pile one by one. Whatever number is on the card that he flips over, he will set on the pile that corresponds with the point on the clock. If he flips an ace, it will go on the one pile, two on the two pile, etc. This will keep going until the piles are completed. The first pile to be completed will have the bomb on that car blow up, as demonstrated when he completes the four pile and again when he completes the eight pile.

After the first car explodes, Anzu finally realizes, holy shit, tempting fate with a bomber on the loose was a BAD IDEA?!

Yugi needs to ensure that he doesn’t complete the piles for any cars that have people in them, especially Anzu’s car, number three. Before he knows it, the three pile already has three cards on it, so he needs to win.

How do you ‘win’ this game, you might ask? Well, initially Yami explains it like this.

Manga!Yami: “There’s only one way to win this game! I have to gather all of the king cards! I started the game by drawing from that pile, so I have to finish the game by completing it!” Uhm, Yami, the bomber never said that. He never explained how to win this game at all. You’re just making a guess.

Yami IS right, but for an entirely different reason. As I already stated, the bomber is on that Ferris wheel, which is how he can see what’s going on (and, really, the only reason this is kept a secret is because the art allows this to stay secret. In reality, the police would be pretty damn suspicious of the guy in the car who keeps looking down with binoculars and talking on the phone….the one with the bomb detonator in his hands. He’s also in the car closest to the ground, so they’d be able to see roughly everything he’s doing. Why would he trap himself in there anyway? I get that he needs to be close to the action to see what cards Yugi’s flipping, but surely there’s a better way.) He can’t blow up car thirteen because he’s the one in car thirteen.

Yami wins the game, and everyone’s rescued. Before Yami walks off with Anzu, he tells the inspector to interview the guy in car thirteen since he’s obviously the bomber. Anzu happily grabs his arm and insists they continue their date….which totally wouldn’t happen.

First of all, the park is bound to be shut down for at least few days because of the TERRORIST ATTACK they just suffered. Secondly, you’re going to be a little busy making statements to the police. Third, Anzu….are you a sociopath? I was going to say that jokingly, but I really mean it. Are you?

Between the messed up stuff you did today and now going off on a date like you didn’t just survive a TERRORIST BOMBING WHILE TRAPPED ON THE FERRIS WHEEL THAT WAS BEING BOMBED, you’d think you’d maybe need a breather….maybe wish to go home? Perhaps look up one of those “therapists” I’ve been hearing about.

In the anime, the game is entirely different. The police are instructed to get a bunch of balloons of various colors. The inspector is then told to release a balloon of any color. He chooses a white balloon. For a second, everyone’s on pins and needles because the balloon catches on Anzu’s car. However, it becomes loose and floats away. Everyone breathes a sigh of relief, but car one suddenly explodes.

Also, somehow the bomb made the car look like this.

ANIMANGACLASHYGOEP14SCREEN5

It looks more like the car was detached, dropped off a cliff and then reattached. How would any bomb cause that kind of damage?

The bomber explains the rules – the colors of the balloons each correspond to a car. If the player can figure out which color corresponds to Anzu’s car, he wins and saves the passengers. If not, the cars will explode and the people will die.

In a very hilarious take on the police handing over the reigns to Yugi in the manga, the anime has the police just flatout saying they can’t play this game. The inspector himself says he doesn’t have the confidence. The. Confidence. You are a goddamn police inspector. You’re not confident playing a game? A game that involves solving a puzzle? Something police inspectors typically do?

I can somewhat understand being hesitant about playing the card game, even if that was purely luck, but this is an actual problem that can be solved logically. The only luck involved is potentially needing to sacrifice cars in order to make it easier to reach the solution.

Yami takes over and accepts the challenge. Anzu realizes Yugi has changed, but unlike Manga!Anzu, she’s not swamping her bikini bottom over it.

The bomber explains some more conditions. Yami has a fifteen minute time limit. If he gives the wrong answer or explodes a car with a person in it, he loses. If he doesn’t provide any answer within fifteen minutes, he’ll detonate all of the bombs.

The only information Yami has is that the white balloon corresponded to car one. All of the cars are identical in color both inside and out, they’re not known by any other names outside of their given numbers, and they’re all the same shape.

The bomber decides to throw Yami a bone. Knowing he needs more to go on, he suggests releasing the yellow balloon. He promises that the balloon does not correspond to a car containing any passengers. The inspector doesn’t believe him, but Yami does, citing that the bomber enjoys his games too much to purposely end it here.

Yami releases the yellow balloon, and, in response, car ten blows up.

He can’t reach a conclusion based on only two answers. Half of his time is already eaten up. The bomber is getting bored, so he suggests releasing another balloon – this time pink. Yami asks if the pink balloon is safe to release, but the bomber refuses to give anymore hints, meaning Yami will have to gamble more than he did before. The bomber threatens to blow up a car with a passenger if he doesn’t release the pink balloon soon. Yami, realizing the bomber still desperately wants to enjoy his game, decides to release the pink balloon.

Car four blows up.

Also, it seems like someone phoenix down’d car one in this shot.

ANIMANGACLASHYGOEP14SCREEN6

Yami keeps looking at his watch, keeping an eye on his time limit. Suddenly, he comes to a revelation. The Ferris wheel is mirroring a clock. The way the numbers correspond to colors is by use of a flower clock. I have no clue what a flower clock is. I tried looking it up, but all I found, predictably enough, were images of either clocks with flowers on them or clocks made in gardens. I don’t know why either would be in an amusement park. When we see the flower clock, it’s a giant clock on the ground that has different colors for each hour of the day. I have no clue what flowers have to do with it.

The park staff member doesn’t know what color corresponds with the number three on the clock, so they have no choice but to go to the clock and see for themselves. It will take two minutes to run there, but they only have one minute. Yami spots a drop tower nearby and heads off to ride that to get an aerial view of the clock. It somehow starts the second Yami sits in it. Are these rides all sentient? What is happening? There shouldn’t be anyone manning this ride and no one was running ahead of him.

Yami spots the clock and finds the color for three – blue.

He’s wrong, and Anzu blows up.

Oh fine, you never let me have my fun.

He’s right, but they’re not done. Yami decides to make him play his game now. He’ll specify where the bombs are and the bomber has to guess. Also, Yami’s kinda just stuck on the tower drop ride?

The bomber likes Yami and games so much that he agrees.

Yami says the hint balloon he’s symbolically releasing is white. The bomber states that the number is one since they’ve already gone over that. Yami says he’s wrong because now they entered into evening time on a 24 hour clock. The white balloon would actually correspond to the number thirteen, as in thirteen o’clock. Yami deduces the same thing he deduced in the manga, that the bomber had a clear view of both him and the Ferris wheel, but the entire park had been evacuated. The only number that doesn’t exist on a traditional analog clock is thirteen.

Yami tells him to blow up car thirteen if he is really wrong. The bomber claims he is wrong and that he’ll blow up car three in retaliation. Surprisingly, Yami tells him that he won’t have time to detonate car three (Also, looking at the detonator, how is he even specifying the cars? It’s literally two buttons.) because thirteen will blow up before he has a chance to push the button.

The bomber laughs, claiming there is no bomb on car thirteen, but scary-ass!Yami educates him a little and claims there is indeed a bomb. He amplifies the sound of his ticking watch over the phone to make the bomber paranoid. Then he implements his punishment game by making the bomber hallucinate a bomb in the car. Despite the fact that he can just try to throw the fake bomb out the window, he instead decides to bust open the door and risk falling to his death.

ANIMANGACLASHYGOEP14SCREEN7

He falls through a concession stand and is alive, but holy fuck Yami! You could’ve killed that guy! I saw the far shot of the Ferris wheel. Car thirteen was up so high it was near the top of the tree line. Yami’s no stranger to nearly killing people, and, in the manga, he canonically has killed people, but wow.

Unlike in the manga where Yami sticks around and Anzu gets to happily finish her date with him, Yami reverts back to what Anzu refers to as ‘usual’ Yugi, which upsets her a little. She then asks “What happened to the cool Yugi from earlier?”…out loud….to ‘usual’ Yugi.

Jonouchi, Honda and Miho reunite with them, which also wouldn’t happen because this place is a terrorist crime scene with a bombed Ferris wheel right there. Anzu is still annoyed that Yami isn’t around, but she’s happy she was able to see him and Yugi’s happy because he’s a precious marshmallow who deserves way better than this bimbo.

————————————–

In regards to the manga chapter, I kinda hate it. Everything with Anzu is terrible because she’s a terrible person. The game was boring and based entirely on luck. And I hate that Anzu ends up getting her dream date with Yami in the end. Screw that noise.

The only good points in the manga were that there were some funny moments and expressions, and most of those were reflected in the anime.

The anime episode, in my opinion, is a million times better than the manga chapter. Sure, there was still a decent degree of Anzu being horrible, but she was more tolerable and acted more understandably than her manga counterpart, and she didn’t end up on a date with Yami in the end. Jonouchi, Honda and Miho had absolutely 100% no purpose in being here. I can’t remember the last time they felt so shoehorned into an episode. I can tune those spots out, though.

The real highlight is in just how much better the anime’s Shadow Game is compared to the manga’s. The manga’s game was based entirely on luck and never became an actual Shadow Game. The anime’s game was pretty well-crafted. Even though the connection to the clock and the flower clock was never really set up very well, it was one of the most intense Shadow Games I’ve watched throughout the series. Not only that, but it ended on an awesome Shadow Game/punishment game where a really scary Yami nearly straight-up murdered a man. I love how he pulled a switcheroo on him and challenged the bomber to his exact same game and beat him. Such a badass move.

Only negative points in the bomber story for the anime are that the ‘Big or small’ ‘quizzes’ were stupid and based entirely on luck. For a guy who Yami deemed as basically being obsessed with games, he’s certainly not good at making them. Those moments were also complete wastes of time, but they did set the tone, so I don’t mind much.

Winner: Anime

Next three episodes are, as far as I can tell, not mirrors of the manga so we’ll have some placeholders to deal with for a bit.

Specifically, the next episode is about…..*sigh* Anzu being jealous that a new girl is giving Yugi attention. Oh boy. More Anzu goodness. Is it my birthday or did the gates of hell open?

Yu-Gi-Oh Episode 10 Sub/Dub Comparison

Plot: Yugi is finally gaining some ground on the fake Kaiba thanks to the real Kaiba helping him out. Can the combined efforts of Yugi and Kaiba stop the fake, or will the Blue-Eyes prove too powerful for them to take on?

———————————-

When they recap the scene before the commercial break (when Kaiba says “Yugi!”) They impose another Millennium symbol on Yugi’s forehead. They didn’t do it before the commercial break….and they redubbed the scene for some reason after it, so I dunno. I guess the Millennium Puzzle mixed its powers with the heart of the cards and killed a virtual dragon.

Subbed:

Dubbed:

Like I mentioned in episode nine, the fake is not a ghost nor is it the ‘evil’ part of Kaiba. 4Kids injected a flashback of Yugi’s mind crush from episode one into this episode to push the concept of Kaiba’s evilness even further. Because making kids believe that evil can infect them is much better than an impostor dressing up as another person.

Also, why would Kaiba’s ‘evil’ part look like that? Wouldn’t it just look like Kaiba only evil, like he looked before? Or are we doing the tried, true and stupid ‘ugly=evil’ bullshit?

Side note – The music used for the fake when he reveals himself is hilarious in the original. It’s like some sort of Runescape music.

Whee, guns!

Subbed:

Dubbed:

I actually have to give them props for this edit because, if you didn’t know the original, you’d probably never know they had guns.

Pegasus threatens Croquet in the dub after he finds out Kaiba is still on the run. In the original, he says it’s not an issue and to just enjoy the duel.

When Kimo turns his head, he’s actually thinking to himself in the original. In the dub, they change it to Pegasus contacting Kimo on some radio telling him to not let Mokuba go no matter what happens. This makes what happens in the end much less of a surprise.

It’s not the first time they’ve dubbed in the radio thing either. The first time Pegasus talks to him over the radio is a dub insert as well. In the original, it’s silent.

They edit out a scene in which the fake Kaiba pulls his cape over his head and suddenly changes his face to look like Pegasus to mock him. I guess they thought this wouldn’t make any sense since the dub fake is Kaiba’s evil self and not a guy in a suit.

Mystical/Holy Elf doesn’t have any special abilities nor does the Book of Mystic Arts grant any abilities beyond increased attack strength. Thus, Mystical Elf couldn’t have transferred its attack power to the Blue-Eyes. Duelist Kingdom logic is fun.

4Kids edited out the wine on Pegasus’s hand after Yugi has that awesome speech. I guess they thought it looked like blood?

Subbed:

Dubbed:

This episode wasn’t as fun as the last because Kaiba quickly needs to run and doesn’t help Yugi anymore, so there’s no cool rival matchup after a short while. Without it, it’s kinda boring. Even with Kaiba’s deck, you know Yugi won’t lose to some goofy hired duelist. After all…not even Kaiba can beat Yugi with Kaiba’s deck.

Next time, Jonouchi Vs. Ryuuzaki!

Yu-Gi-Oh Episode 9 Sub/Dub Comparison

YGOEP9SDCTITLE
I felt like getting a facial tattoo after I died…..Doesn’t everyone?

Plot: Kaiba has seemingly died and come back from the grave after running away from Pegasus’ goons. His ‘ghost’ is all that’s left, and it has a desire to exact revenge against Yugi for beating him. Meanwhile, the real Kaiba has snuck into his hidden computer room to help Yugi out. Can Yugi beat this fake even if he has Kaiba’s deck? Will 4Kids ever stop the ghost puns?

—————————————-

I’ll get this out of the way quickly. The ‘ghost’ is not a ghost. He’s also not the ‘evil’ part of Kaiba that was sent to the Shadow Realm. He’s a hacker working for Pegasus that is dressed up like Kaiba. The biggest mystery surrounding him is how the hell did he cram his fat ass into that suit and how did it make him a foot taller?

In the original, after Yugi nods to his friends before the duel, Kimo explains that he’s facing a ghost Kaiba that blames him for his death, will break Yugi’s spirit and force him to lose the match, giving Kaiba Corp to Pegasus. In the dub, 4Kids decides to make this even more mystic by having fake!Kaiba communicate with Yugi telepathically basically saying nothing he couldn’t have said out loud. Then he tells Kimo that Pegasus can have Kaiba Corp after he exacts his revenge.

I don’t see why it’s so shocking that fake!Kaiba had a Cyclops/Hitatsume Giant card. It’s a pretty common card, and of course a fake!Kaiba would have his common cards.

4Kids obviously added that vocal song during Kaiba’s secret agent-ness scene. Not much to complain about, though. It’s a cool song that matches well with the scene. Oh and they removed the words ‘Retina sensor’ from the door scanner. Excuse me, I mean ‘Retna sensor.’ As well as ‘Please show me’ and ‘Security lock’.

Kaiba’s computer is much less talkative and has less of a personality in the original version. However, again, the change is alright by me.

Okay, 4Kids, what gives with that Funny Bunny with a strike through it as the “Access Denied” screen? The original just said “Access Denied” …in English. If I’ll give 4Kids anything for that it’s that they actually remembered a reference from their show. Also, the text on the screen is replaced with a loading bar.

If I’m getting this right, Kaiba simply used the satellite to hack into Industrial Illusions’ main computer. The dub makes it sound like he took the satellite out of the sky and crashed it into the computer mainframe! There’s a big difference there, 4Kids!

Just because they used zoomy animation doesn’t mean they were actually sending the satellite there! You could’ve killed people 4Kids! Call me crazy. Seriously, watch this episode and tell me I’m wrong. He makes jokes about the word “crash”, his computer says “impact” – it seriously sounds like he just made the satellite fall out of the sky.

The password between the two versions is drastically different and, quite frankly, the dub makes Pegasus look like a dumbass. In the original, Yugi’s data is kept in an impenetrable fortress. Kaiba gets the joke and says the password is Alcatraz. In the dub, Kaiba just calls Pegasus an egomaniac and says the password is Pegasus.

First off, a computer genius using his name as a password? Why didn’t he just make it ‘password’ it’s about as useless and stupid. Second, why change this? This can easily be translated, and Alcatraz isn’t a foreign marking to the US. Were there legal issues or is there something offensive about saying the name of a prison?

——————————————–

This episode was alright. It’s cool to see enemies team up every now and then. It was a really weird duel though. The impostor is just unsettling, but I guess that’s the point….

Next time, the duel between Yugi and the fake Kaiba concludes. Will he be able to defeat the impostor and save Mokuba?

Yu-Gi-Oh Episode 8 Sub/Dub Comparison

YGOSDCEP8title

Plot: Mokuba has been kidnapped by Pegasus in order to take over Kaiba’s company. Desperate to save the company and his brother’s reputation, Mokuba escapes and steals a duelist’s deck and star chips to challenge Yugi so that Pegasus can’t duel him and win control over the company. Yugi and the others have thirty minutes to help the theft victim or he will be forced to leave the island with the other people who lost their star chips.

———————————————-

The words “Funny Rabbit” were edited off of the comic Pegasus has. Because English is evil too. Oddly, though, they also add a picture of Funny Bunny to the cover.

Pegasus’s wine was dialogue changed to fruit juice. Because alcohol doesn’t exist…I can understand editing out smoking and alcohol if a good character is doing it (prevent kids from imitating their favorite characters) but doesn’t a villain doing those things insinuate that they’re bad?

Original version says it’s been nine hours since the tournament began. The dub says six.

Both versions clearly state that those without star chips must leave the island…Again, why is no one bothering to take away Anzu/T’ea, Honda/Tristan and Bakura?

I love how Pegasus obviously has cameras all over the island yet he can’t/won’t catch cheaters. Anyone could steal star chips this way as Bandit Keith and Mokuba show…Then again, Pegasus is a cheater too…

I also love how they arrange a luxury cruise liner to bring them to the island, but only have a rowboat to get them off.

They edit out Jonouchi telling the kid that if he finds his chips that he has to give him half. Makes the entire scene where it transitions from heroic to exasperated groans incredibly awkward.

Yugi needs Yami….to beat a kid half his age at a game he’s supposedly awesome at….I just….geez.

Jonouchi doesn’t insinuate anything about Yugi’s Millennium puzzle in the original. It’s like 4Kids is constantly dropping hints at the fact that there’s a different spirit in there. As if the transformation sequences every episode weren’t a freakin’ clue.

They impose a Millennium symbol on Yugi’s head right after Mokuba puts his chips down, and T’ea follows it up by saying it’s like Yugi is looking into his soul….We get it, 4Kids, the damn necklace is magic. We’re picking up what you’re slamming down. In the original version, Anzu just says that Mokuba doesn’t have a duel glove, thus he must be the criminal.

Subbed: YGOSDCEP8SCREEN3

Dubbed:YGOSDCEP8SCREEN4

In the flashback, original version, Kaiba says he needs to learn of the heart of the cards in order to be as good as Yugi. Then he gives Mokuba a secret key card that allows access to numerous company files and secrets that he’s meant to protect while he’s away. (Yeah, leave a little kid in charge of a multi-billion dollar company. That’s smart. Hope he doesn’t get kidnap—oh wait.)

In the dub, they strangely omit this. Kaiba just says he’s not himself and needs time away to think. He gives Mokuba a card claiming it was his favorite, never showing what it is, and then leaves. I also don’t like how Kaiba’s constantly calling his brother “kid” here. They’re closer than that.

This is kind of a big deal, because that card is the whole focal point behind Mokuba’s kidnapping. They kidnapped him to find out where the key card was. In the dub, he’s kidnapped because they want to control him because only a Kaiba can give orders in his company. The original version makes more sense, but I guess they didn’t want to associate cards with kidnapping…No wait, cards are associated with all sorts of bad crap in this show, so I guess it’s just pointless.

I find it hard to believe that a kid who was brought up in a company that focuses on Duel Monsters and is the brother of the world champion of Duel Monsters doesn’t know the main basics of Duel Monsters. If a monster’s attack points are lower than your opponent’s monster’s, you lose. You had to have picked up at least that much just by watching Kaiba duel once or twice.

Again, they impose a Millennium symbol on Yugi’s head to insinuate that he’s using his powers in the dub, when in the original, he’s not. Because Yugi’s so stupid he needed magic to figure out that was Mokuba. What with his clever disguise of wearing the exact same clothes he was wearing the last time Yugi saw him, pulling his scarf over his mouth and wearing a hat, he should be in the CIA.

Subbed:YGOSDCEP8SCREEN5

Dubbed: YGOSDCEP8SCREEN6

In the original, the Big Five, as they’ll later be called, says they’ll talk with Kaiba about the arrangement with Pegasus. In the dub, they want Kaiba out of the picture, AKA killed.

Dub!Mokuba: “If I can’t beat you *grabs two of Yugi’s star chips* I’ll have you disqualified!”

…..Because Yugi losing two of his five star chips means he’ll be disqualified? What?

I don’t know why, but they edited in a scene of Mokuba looking down and sad just to say “Let’s do it” right before they transition back to the boat.

Kaiba’s scene at his hideaway is edited in to before when Yugi and the others arrive at the docks.

4Kids edited in the goons knocking at Kaiba’s door by basically cutting out the door and quickly animating a zoom-in and out a few times. Because it’s rude not to knock dammit! They do this twice, by the way. Once after Kaiba glances at the door and another before he places the duel disks in the briefcase.

The infamous guns changed to pointing fingers scene. And yes, it still looks ridiculous. They also edited out the scene where he fires the gun at Kaiba, and they edited out the shot of Kaiba falling. I do have to say Kaiba saying “You’ll never take me alive” still tickles my funny bone. I will admit, their cut of Kaiba blocking the bullet is impressively done. You’d never notice there’s a (literal) shot missing from that.

They splice in a closeup shot of the ocean after the initial shot of the window.

I don’t think I have to tell you that fake-Kaiba doesn’t make puns in the original version. In the original, he just says “I have to have revenge” over and over.

This episode was okay. I think it was a little bit of an excuse to get rid of some of Yugi’s star chips to give him more duels to compete in. However, it does show how dedicated Mokuba is to his brother and introduces us to one of the weirder duels of the show.

Next episode, Yugi duels ‘ghost’ Kaiba or Kaiba’s evil shadow realm counterpart as he’s known in the dub.

Yu-Gi-Oh Episode 5 Sub/Dub Comparison

0ooujre

Plot: Yugi is continuing his duel with Haga as he prepares for his most powerful monster, the Ultimate Moth. Yugi uses the new rules to his advantage and wins out, defeating Haga and eliminating him from the tournament. But that is only the first bump on the road to getting his grandpa back.

———————

4Kids seems to be putting effort into making Mai very mean. Mai’s not really humble by any means in the original, but she’s constantly throwing out “losers” and “geeks” while overall mocking the group in the dub.

Mai’s first dialogue is also changed slightly. She seems to believe Yugi can’t win against Weevil in the dub, while she simply says you can’t judge the duel by one turn as one turn can be all that it takes to turn a duel around, as Yugi showed with his Mirror Force, in the original.

Okay, why the hell did Yugi attack the cocoon? He knew the defense power was 300 points greater than Gaia’s attack points. That’s like a rookie level mistake…..*cough* Though, technically Weevil made an even rookie-er mistake because he clearly summons the cocoon in attack mode instead of defense mode, which means Gaia would’ve easily won since the cocoon’s attack is 0. While we’re on the subject, Yugi cheats by using Polymerization, a magic card, during Weevil’s turn.

I don’t know why this matters, but in the original, the Great Moth sounds like, well….a donkey. In the dub it sounds like a bird. Neither is really…uh, accurate (How does a giant moth sound?) but the dub sounds better.

They edited out a flashback of Yugi and the group running through the forest as moths flew overhead. The flashback was to trigger Yugi’s epiphany that the Great Moth was poisoning Gaia. In the dub, Weevil just tells him what’s going on. To be fair, though, it’s not like the moths were giving off poison scales to begin with, so even the original doesn’t make much sense sometimes.

Another mention of Jonouchi’s eighth place win in the regionals is cut. Poor Joey, can’t catch a break.

For some reason, in only this episode, a picture of the loser of the duel (in this case, Weevil) pops up on screen and an X goes through his picture signifying that he’s been eliminated.

————————

This episode was the first taste into dueling weirdness. It also felt a bit Pokemon-ish with the whole ‘enemy’s wet so hit them with lightning’ trick. I would’ve liked to have seen the Great Moth fully formed, but I guess that’s okay.

Next episode, it’s Jonouchi’s first duel of the tournament and it’s with the supposedly psychic Mai. Can Jonouchi debunk her powers or will he be knocked out in round one?

Yu-Gi-Oh Episode 4 Sub/Dub Comparison

Plot: Duelist Kingdom is underway and Yugi has his sights trained on Insect Haga for revenge for throwing his precious Exodia cards into the sea. However, Haga has plenty of tricks up his sleeve by using the new tournament rules to his advantage. Can Yugi exterminate Haga from the tournament? Oh God, now I’m using puns. Damn you 4Kids!

—————————————–

In the original, when Pegasus makes his speech, he explains the rules of the tournament games (You must use Duel Monster cards, 2000 life points and no direct attacks.) Pegasus in the dub just tells everyone to be at their best….Kinda lame to report, but this episode has been fairly changeless (barring the inclusion of a ton of dialogue over silence) so far. Pegasus also mentions that they have 48 hours to get ten star chips or they go home in the original version. In the dub, there’s no mentioned time limit.

I will never understand this – later we see that the security guys around the island are incredibly strict when it comes to star chips. When you’re out, you’re gone. No exceptions – not even if your chips were stolen. So how is it that Anzu and Honda (and Bakura) are able to fly under the radar? Just the fact that they have no dueling glove should be a dead giveaway. It just baffles me that they never get thrown out even when they meet several officials. Hell, when they enter the finals, one of the guards actually points out that they’re not duelists and yet they do nothing about it.

Bakura might be doing something Ring-wise to prevent this, subconsciously of course, but there’s no reason for the others.

In the original, Pegasus told Insect Haga of the new rule. Why? I don’t know. It could’ve been a special gift for winning that other tournament from episode two. In the dub, Weevil says he stole the new rules.

This is prevalent in both versions. Mirror Force doesn’t affect your opponent’s life points at all. It just destroys all of the monsters on your opponent’s side of the field when an attack is called by the enemy. But, in this season, that’s really the least of their worries.

In the dub, Weevil foreshadows his Ultimate Moth Cocoon. In the original, the episode ends at Yugi calling Weevil weak. I guess this can be forgiven seeing as how the Japanese preview basically does the same thing, but still.

———————————

All in all, this episode was fairly uneventful and boring. It was mostly focused on learning the new rules of duelist kingdom and the duel barely takes up any of the episode.

Next episode, the duel between Yugi and Haga concludes.

Yu-Gi-Oh Episode 3 Sub/Dub Comparison

This is the face of someone trustworthy.

Plot: Yugi accepts Pegasus’ invitation to Duelist Kingdom in order to recover his grandfather’s soul. Yugi helps Jonouchi get aboard the ship heading for the tournament by giving him one of his star chips, while Anzu and Honda sneak onboard.

While aboard, they meet some of their future opponents; Insect Haga, Dinosaur Ryuzaki and Mai Kujaku. Haga gets his hands on the Exodia cards and throws them overboard to ensure that they can never be used against him. Jonouchi jumps into the waters below to recover the cards but can only retrieve two before needing rescue. After being rescued by Anzu, Honda and Yugi, Jonouchi tells them of his sister’s medical troubles, which is why he desperately needs the prize money from the tournament.

———————————————-

In the original, as Yugi’s on the school roof, he sees Pegasus’s face overlaid on the sunset as he thinks about his Millennium Eye and how he could see his cards. In the dub, Pegasus has been replaced by Yugi’s grandpa and he’s worrying about his grandpa instead.

Subbed:

Dubbed:

Entire Show Edit: All flashbacks now have fuzzy white borders, common of all 4Kids productions.

A running ‘proverb’ so to speak throughout the show is ‘that which can be seen, yet not seen,’ the true shape of the Millennium Puzzle before finishing it, friendship etc. The dub completely omits this.

In the original, a bigger bully named Ushio sorta hired himself as Yugi’s bodyguard to take care of Jonouchi and Honda for him, since they were bullying him, for a lump sum. In the dub version, he’s unnamed, and Ushio makes no mention of any bodyguard deal. Also they add that they got Ushio expelled.

Mai in the original version basically ignores Jonouchi entirely upon their first meeting. In the dub she’s very mean to him for no reason. I guess this is to prod the JoeyxMai relationship in a weird way?

Directly after that scene, Anzu is upset that Yugi and Jonouchi are lusting after Mai and calls them perverts. In the dub, T’ea is upset because Mai’s so arrogant and keeps babbling that Yugi’s the best duelist. I guess this is to prod YugixT’ea?

Name Change: Mai Kujaku is changed to Mai Valentine.

Am I the only one who finds it incredibly arrogant that Joey/Jonouchi barely makes it onto to boat only through Yugi’s kindness and he has the nerve to bitch that he doesn’t get a private room? He does this in both versions, by the way.

When Anzu gets up, she’s looking for a toilet and Honda tells her to go pee off the side of the ship. This was probably seen as crass humor by 4Kids, so they changed it to T’ea being cold (so warm yourself up by getting closer to the freezing cold ocean in the freezing cold open air.) and then Tristan tells her the sun will rise in another few hours and she gets pissed. (I know it’s stupid, but he probably meant the sunlight will warm her up in a few hours.) Afterward, before the transition, Anzu actually says she’s cold and shivers, but 4Kids cut this….WHY? That scene actually lends credence to your edit, you morons!

Mai in the original version says she’ll do anything (wink wink) if Ryuzaki wins. 4Kids has their head in the gutter, so they changed it to simply a kiss.

I don’t entirely understand Mai’s perfume trick. First of all, Rex/Ryuzaki can’t smell that her cards are drenched in perfume? He’s almost as close to them as she is. Second, all of those smells would meld together when on top of each other in a deck. How could she tell them apart enough to know which is where?

Obviously the card “Cyber Bondage” with the giant needle nipples needed to be censored to ‘Cyber Shield’ and the needle nipples went poof. See your doctor if the same happens to you.

Subbed:

Dubbed:

It’s pointless, really, but at the end of the Japanese version, before the preview, they overlay a rather intimidating picture of Yami for some reason. In the dub, his face has been removed and the shot only focuses on the sun rising.

This episode was decent, but nothing really happened outside of Yugi losing Exodia. Not like it matters that much, I doubt it’d be allowed in the tournament since its use is banned most everywhere, but he did need to lose it technically to avoid getting more instant wins. Other than that, it was a neat little intro to a few of the tournament competitors and not much else.

Next episode, Yugi challenges Insect Haga to a duel as revenge for Exodia. Can he beat the master of insects?

30DAC: Day 19 – Most Epic Scene Ever

Really starting to pain me huh, Challenge? ‘Epic’ is such an iffy word in this context. There are so many scenes that are epic in anime but in different ways. Epic action, epic impact in visuals, epic in terms of emotion, epic romance, it’s such a difficult area to tread into. It’s also difficult because there’s an entirely different section for a badass scene.

I decided that ‘epic’ in this regard should mean a huge scene, likely a fight, that is just so ridiculously awesome yet over the top and overpowered and just overall fun….And I’m gonna make people mad because this is a scene from Yugioh. Trust me, it surprised even me because I had several fight scenes from awesome anime in mind.

I’m talking about Dragon Master Knight’s debut.

Should really be called ‘Blue Eye Ultimate Dragon Feat. Black Luster Soldier if you squint.’

Assuming you know of YGO, and most people do to some degree, this takes place during the virtual reality arc. Kaiba is trapped in a virtual Duel Monsters game of his creation by his board members called the Big Five. Yugi, Joey and Mokuba go in to save him and eventually (and randomly) see Mai there who decides to help too.

Yugi and the gang join up with Kaiba to take down the Big Five, who have manifested themselves into a giant five-headed multi-elemental dragon called the Mythic Dragon who has 5000 attack points. The group tries to fight the thing to no avail and they start dropping like flies to its power…..Literally. They start getting killed. (Well sorta) It’s down to Yugi and Kaiba who are forced to join forces and create one of the most overpowered and ridiculously difficult to create monsters I’ve ever seen.

Dragon Master Knight or it’s Japanese name Master of Dragon Soldier (is it me or do both of those names just sound like they have horrible grammar?) is created by making Blue Eyes Ultimate Dragon, which requires fusing three Blue Eyes together, and creating Black Luster Soldier, which requires pulling off a ritual. After that, you have to fuse those two monsters together. In any other situation, this would be near impossible, but the powers of Yugi and Kaiba’s insane luck as well as the power of the virtual reality game which basically allowed them to make these monsters without going through the proper channels in the first place came through for them. Hooray convenient shortcuts!

But believe it or not, even that ridiculous fusion is not enough to take down the Mythic Dragon. They have equal attack strengths, so they’d only end up destroying each other. Ultimate Dragon (4500 atk) + Black Luster Soldier (3000 atk) = 5000 atk? I know they don’t stack the attack, but a 500 point bump is a little disappointing is all. In hindsight, that’d be fine to have them stalemate as long as they beat the Mythic Dragon, but we have to totally kick its ass.

That’s achieved through its insane special ability that allows it to gain 500 extra attack points for every dragon ever played in the duel, of which there are eight, so Dragon Master Knight gets a point boost to 9000, almost twice as much as the Mythic Dragon.

It ends up killing the Mythic Dragon with the most awesome attack name ever. Not the dumb dub name of ‘Dragon Sabre Blast’, the awesome Japanese name of Galaxy Crusher. Friggin’ Galaxy Crusher!

This entire arc is ridiculous and this battle is so over the top both in both the ‘dramatic’ (and usually unnecessary) deaths, the silly costumes the group has to wear because of the world they’re in, the speeches, the completely insane summoning of an insanely overpowered monster (Hell, Kaiba’s deck is loaded with dragons. Can you imagine how much more powerful that thing would be if he decided to chuck those in there?) it’s just ridiculous and silly epic fun that only one of the weirdest arcs in Yugioh could’ve delivered.

Bonus: For people who don’t like to partake in the silly awesomeness that is Yugioh sometimes, my other choice was going to be Levi’s attack on the female titan from Attack on Titan. I mean, he’s already built up like a titan killing god, but look at this;

He is going straight up Sonic the Hedgehog: Saw Edition on the most dangerous titan they’ve encountered so far. My views on Attack on Titan are mixed, but the concept of the maneuver gear and that battles that occur on it is by far one of the most interesting and epic parts the show, and Levi just flaunts it in that scene. That was just awesome.

Does that mean Eren’s Tails?

Yu-Gi-Oh Episode 2 Sub/Dub Comparison

EHH?!
I lost to Anzu? Wow, I do need help…

Plot: Jonouchi is training with Grandpa to be in an upcoming tournament. He comes in eighth, but still has a lot to learn. After watching the finals of the tournament on TV, Yugi gets a mysterious package containing a glove, some stars and a videotape. As he pops the video in, he sees the creator of Duel Monsters, Pegasus Crawford, on the screen proposing a duel to Yugi.

He drags Yugi into a strange shadow world to play a Yami no Game, a game played with real monsters and real consequences. Whoever is ahead within fifteen minutes wins. If Yugi wins, he’s left alone. If he loses, he has to go to Duelist Kingdom for a tournament being held by Pegasus. Will Yugi win or will he lose something precious to him?

————————————————–

Weevil and Rex have much better voices in the Japanese version. Rex’s voice in the dub is insanely nasally and it sounds like he has a throat infection. Weevil’s voice is horrid in the dub. He sounds like a cartoon weasel. Rex’s voice in the Japanese version is very plain, but much less grating than the dub. Weevil’s voice is incredibly fitting in the original. It’s a very soft and methodical voice that leads you to believe he’s hiding something. Weevil’s not a kind-hearted person, and you can tell he’s not trustworthy just by his eyes, but his voice adds some degree of mystery about his true intentions.

Name Changes: Dinosaur Ryuzaki is changed to Rex Raptor, and Insect Haga is changed to Weevil Underwood. I find no reason to prod 4Kids about this since they were just taking Japanese lame pun names and changing them into English lame pun names.

The poster for the upcoming Duel Monsters tournament is completely redone for the dub. However, the Japanese poster was incredibly lame IMO and the dub one is far superior. Congrats 4Kids. I complimented you.

Subbed:

Dubbed:

….HOWEVER, as you can see, there’s no text on the dubbed poster, so there’s no real reason why he’d be so entranced by it. It’s also an awful advertisement for the tournament. There’s no information written on it at all, so it doesn’t even really count as an advertisement for the tournament. Since 4Kids is so paint-edit hungry, you’ll eventually see that practically every sign and advertisement in their shows is useless.

There’s no real reason given in the dub as to why Joey wants to join that tournament. In the original version, it’s heavily hinted that it’s because there’s a three million (?) dollar reward. Grandpa says he wants to cleanse Joey of his impure intention of simply getting money from dueling by teaching him the heart of the cards. Then Joey screams as they fade out. In the dub, Grandpa basically starts grilling him about all sorts of Duel Monsters questions.

In the original version, Jonouchi makes it to the final eight in the aforementioned tournament and most of their conversion on the couch includes mentions of it. In the dub, they act as if he never even competed. I do have to say, it’s incredibly impressive that Jonouchi made it that far just by a few weeks of training. He really sucked at the game before. As for why this is changed from eighth place to never competing in the tournament at all, well, I really believe they wanted Joey to be almost a complete rookie out of the gate so they removed this small plot point.

Pegasus in the original is very entertaining to listen to. He constantly switches back and forth between English and Japanese. I don’t mind Pegasus’s dubbed voice at all. In fact, it’s pretty fitting, but he does sound immensely creepy sometimes.

I understand Pegasus’s power to see other people’s cards and read their strategies, but he can’t always have the right card in his hand to counter whatever the other player is planning.

The duel between Pegasus and Yugi is heavily changed, at least dialogue wise. In the dub, Pegasus takes this opportunity to tell Yugi all about the story of Duel Monsters. He explains that they’re in a Shadow Game in the Shadow Realm and how the game was made using real monsters in ancient Egypt blah blah blah. They even put the final winning attack in the Pegasus vs. Yugi battle in there for no good reason besides it’s the one in the first season that looked the most Egyptian-y.

In the original, they only talk about Pegasus’s upcoming tournament and how he’s using his Millennium Eye to win.

In the original, Yugi seems very honorable in that he wants to destroy his controlled Devil Dragon instead of the Piper, which has lower attack points, thus would suffer the most damage. He wants to destroy the dragon first because he has a duty to his cards to not allow them to be under the control of a malicious being. In the dub, Yugi just gloats and mentions nothing about duty. He just attacks the Koumori Dragon and moves on.

Yugi mentions that he could win if he stalls until the time runs out when he’s ahead in life points. However, he doesn’t want to because that wouldn’t be a legit win to him. Dub!Yugi makes no mention of this ‘loophole’.

Next episode, it’s off to Duelist Kingdom!

Yu-Gi-Oh Episode 1 Sub/Dub Comparison

YGO Ep 1
Permanent marker smiley faces create a bond that not even the forces of darkness can break!…..Literally..But that’s later.

Plot: Yugi and his friends love playing the card game Duel Monsters, but when the world champ, Seto Kaiba, overhears that Yugi’s grandpa has a super rare card at his game shop, he believes it to be the card he’s been searching for for ages. When he arrives, lo and behold, it’s the Blue Eyes White Dragon he’s been looking for. However, Yugi’s grandpa, Solomon, won’t sell it or trade for it because it’s so precious to him.

Kaiba later kidnaps Yugi’s grandpa (because logical reactions) and duels him for the card. Solomon falls ill after losing to Kaiba, and Yugi goes to save him. Kaiba rips up the Blue-Eyes to prevent it from ever being used against him since Kaiba already has three Blue Eyes, and Duel Monsters’ decks can only have three copies of one card in a deck. He challenges Yugi to a duel as his grandpa goes to the hospital. Yugi struggles with Kaiba for a long time, believing he’ll lose. Will one card be the difference between triumph and defeat?

——————————————–

I don’t completely understand Kaiba’s reasoning for kidnapping Yugi’s grandpa. I know he wanted the Blue Eyes, but why did he want it so badly?

1) It’s pretty clear his Grandpa was never going to sell it to anyone or trade it.

2) He also didn’t show a desire to use it in a duel.

3) Even if it was ever used against him, he has three Blue-Eyes – he has a huge advantage. In addition, tearing up a card doesn’t mean it can’t be used in anymore duels. I mean, maybe in duels using the holograms (because the system probably couldn’t ‘read’ the card that way) but it’s still usable. If you wanted it gone so badly, you should’ve burned it.

4) Why destroy it anyway? Free backup Blue-Eyes in case anything happens to the three he has.

Why does Joey mention that Yugi has the Millennium Puzzle when he’s listing off reasons as to why he can win? He doesn’t know at this point that that thing has magical powers to help him win duels, so basically he’s saying “Hey Yugi, you can win this card game because you have a giant necklace!” In the original version he just talks about how Yugi helped change him from a fight-loving thug.

In order to make it a surprise that Kaiba has the other three Blue-Eyes, they omit the part of Kaiba’s speech before the duel where he mentions that a deck can only have three copies of the same card, and he destroyed the fourth because he couldn’t use it and didn’t want it used against him.

This season is well-known for the utmost disregard of the rules of the game. In the Yu-Gi-Oh game, each player starts out with 8000 life points. What you can summon depends on how many stars the monster has. If a monster has four stars or below, it can instantly be summoned. If it has five to six stars, it requires one monster to be sacrificed from the field. If a monster has seven or more stars, it requires two sacrifices. In this season, incredibly powerful monsters can be summoned from the start and each duel requires only 2000 life points on each player. You’d think this would make duels go faster…..Silly you! :3

To be honest, though, I like this season. Sure the rules are used as toilet paper and a lot of the moves make no sense, but that makes duels kinda exciting and more fun.

You also hardly ever see direct attacks in this season. In the game, if you have no monsters on the field but your opponent does, they can attack your life points directly causing damage equal to the number of attack points a monster has.

Take the duel in this episode for example. Surely Kaiba has other monsters that he can summon from his hand when Saggi is on the field. If he did, Yugi’s one monster per turn defense would fail, and he’d win in a matter of a couple of turns, yet he doesn’t. In addition, it doesn’t seem to matter if you have more than one monster out. If your opponent has one defense monster, I guess you’re barred from using the other monster to attack.

Kaiba states that the Swords of Revealing Light card only affects monsters that are currently on the field during activation. A new monster won’t be under the same spell. This is entirely wrong – new monsters are just as affected by Swords as the others.

Subbed, dubbed, that friendship marker smiley face thing is still insanely cheesy.

Exodia comes out of a pentagram in the original. They added more lines in the dubbed version to avoid controversy, though it makes more sense to use the regular star design since it has five points and Exodia uses five cards/parts….Also, technically, that’s far from a Satanic pentagram, but whatever.

Dubbed:

Name Changes: I honestly don’t understand why they chose to change only some of their names. 4Kids changes names a lot in order to Americanize their shows, but only a handful are changed in Yu-Gi-Oh.

Katsuya Jonouchi is changed to Joey Wheeler, Hiroto Honda is Tristan Taylor and Anzu Mazaki is Te’a Gardner. Yugi’s last name is altered in a weird way. His last name is Muto, but it’s ‘changed’ to Moto for the dub, for some reason.

Pegasus also had a slight name change. In the original, he’s Pegasus J. Crawford. In the dub he’s Maximillion Pegasus. This is yet another name change I just don’t get. Why change it so that his first name is his last name? Either way, both the original and dub characters call him Pegasus. Though, I do have to say, at least the dub makes Pegasus’s parents look better. Max is a fairly normal first name and you can’t do much about your surname. His Mom and Dad must’ve hated his guts to name him Pegasus….

Entire Show Edit: The dubbed version never shows the title cards.

Entire Show Edit: The opening and ending themes have been replaced for the entire run and the next episode previews have been removed……Though, to be completely honest, I prefer the dub version’s better, at least for this season. Later seasons get better themes.

Entire Show Edit: All of the cards had to be edited for the American release to not look like the TCG cards (Trying to avoid product placement in kid’s shows and whatnot, though I could never make heads or tails of the actual rules involved with that.) Instead of showing them as they look as the real-life TCG cards, they only show the picture, color, attack and defense points. This causes a lot of confusion during the series as the characters seem to read cards several times, but there’s no text to read. It also makes you wonder how anyone knows what these cards do.

Entire Show Edit: Though Kaiba is still an asshole in the series, he’s is much more respectful in the original version. Dub!Kaiba slings insults and treats people like crap while original!Kaiba is more subtly condescending and uses honorifics.

Entire Show Edit: As typical 4Kids fashion, a lot of the music is replaced and there is hardly ever any silence.

I’ve brought this up before and I might as well do it again, dubbed Yugi never sat well with me. I can partly understand if his friends don’t realize his eyes, demeanor and height change when he duels, kinda….But Yami’s voice is so deep compared to Yugi’s in the dub that it’s completely unbelievable that they wouldn’t notice that.

In the Japanese version, Yami sounds just like Yugi only using a deeper, smoother voice. It’s a very subtle change.

Don’t get me wrong, Dan Green does an incredible job as Yami, and I commend him in his range because he does not sound like Yugi at all, but the change is too drastic for me …Also, why is it they all seem to notice when Yugi gets encompassed by light but no one bothers building on that?

Next episode, Pegasus and Yami have a showdown through a video tape. Will the tracking need to be adjusted during the duel!? Tune in and find out!
