The Salty Anime Challenge Day 3: Anime with an Over ‘8’ Rating on MAL that You Disliked

Today’s entry was really difficult. I think the worst I get with highly rated shows is disappointed. Salt levels might be low today.

Junjou Romantica might be a big contender if I remembered it enough to talk about it in detail. (Rewatch is imminent because I distinctly remember being quite salty about this show)

Kill La Kill was already done in the previous entry, so I won’t give it this spot. Know that it would’ve won otherwise, though. However, maybe not because I might not feel comfortable giving it this spot considering I never finished it.

Guess I gotta come up with something. If I had to give one, it’d be Attack on Titan.

And I don’t dislike AoT, I was just disappointed with the first season because it seemed drawn out and basically required or demanded a second season because the ending didn’t really resolve anything and ended with a cliffhanger.

I know we have the second season now (haven’t watched it yet) but back then I felt kinda robbed. If we never got additional seasons, I’d be more inclined to be fully salty.

The action is fantastic, some of the best I’ve seen in anime, and I really like the style of series. Armin (Who should be the main character. I have always held that opinion and still do.), Jean and Levi the Ultimate Badass were my favorite characters, but I just felt seriously let down considering how much my friends hyped it up.

However, I didn’t much care for some of characters, particularly Eren. And Mikasa, while being badass, was also kinda irritating because of her near obsessed levels of attachment to Eren when he doesn’t care for her nearly as much.

In addition, the deaths seriously start losing their impact after a while. It quickly gets The Walking Dead syndrome where you’re just waiting for superfluous characters to die. I couldn’t even keep track of their names after the midway point. They appear, they stick around for a little while, they die, we get more. You also start to not want to get attached to characters who seem more important because who knows when they’ll die?

Maybe that last one’s a little petty because, in a post-apocalyptic series like this, the looming fear of death needs to be a staple. But it shouldn’t be so frequent that you basically become numb to it. Maybe that’s part of the point. Maybe in this world, as the characters see so much death, they simultaneously become numb to it to a degree because they can’t let every death hit them too hard, but it’s different to have that feeling in the narrative as opposed to feeling it as a reader.

Again, didn’t hate it or even really dislike it, but I was disappointed in it back when it first came out. I couldn’t even read the manga all the way through what the anime covered because I didn’t care for the art and I felt like Eren was more of an ass in it. I’m definitely watching season two when I get a chance, though. We’ll see about season three after that.

The Salty Anime Challenge Intro

Hey everyone! It’s been 278 years since my last attempt to do one of these challenges, and FueledbySmiling recently came up with one that had an amazing concept – The Salty Anime Challenge. Like many other challenges, this one asks you to write about something anime related once a day for 30 days, but this challenge focuses specifically on the negative side of the anime world. The side that is a perpetual salt factory. Either a little salty or ‘You should regularly check your blood pressure’ salty. I realize I’m a little late to the party, but better late than never! Let the salt commence!

Day 1: Least favourite anime
Day 2: A popular and/or hyped anime that you didn’t care for
Day 3: Anime with an over ‘8’ rating on MAL that you disliked
Day 4: The first anime that you hated and/or dropped
Day 5: What is something that you would change in your least favourite anime that would make you like it?

Day 6: A show that you wanted to like (due to the synopsis) but couldn’t
Day 7: A character that ruined (or almost ruined) a show for you
Day 8: Least favourite genre(s)
Day 9: Least favourite anime trope(s)
Day 10: What is something that you dislike about a show you love?

Day 11: Least favourite art style or art technique
Day 12: Least favourite male/female/sidekick character
Day 13: A sad anime that made you feel nothing
Day 14: An anime that shouldn’t have been as long as it was
Day 15: In terms of story, characters, animation, voice acting, etc… what is something that you find yourself always avoiding. (Example, an anime with bad animation will make you turn away even if it may have rave reviews. Or you’ll stay away from short animes, because 2-7mins isn’t enough time to develop anything)

Day 16: Least favourite OP or ED
Day 17: An anime that you have no desire to watch, even though it’s popular
Day 18: An unpopular anime that deserves being unpopular
Day 19: Least favourite -dere character
Day 20: What is an anime argument that you absolutely hate hearing?

Day 21: An anime that you thought you’d hate (due to genre/tropes), but actually love
Day 22: An anime that everyone hates and/or has a low score, but you love
Day 23: What a weird day to end this on, but that’s what salty challenges do. They end on a weird number. So, how did you find this challenge and what is one last thing that you’d like to be salty about?

30DAC – FINALE: Anime You Wish Never Ended and Continued On

Wow, the end of our adventure already? Where you going in such a hurry, November? Anyway, I was actually really confused about our final prompt here. Does this mean continue on indefinitely or just a show I wish had gotten more time like another season? Because, in all honesty, even if I love a show, I’d be hard-pressed to say I’d never want it to end. Shows can have a lot of steam depending on their premise, writing and characters, but it’s incredibly rare to find a show that lasts for over a decade and still has the same staying power as it did when it started.

Western shows have the same problem. Even if a show is still okay, after numerous years of being on the air, practically everyone will agree that there is a time already passed for the show to end and give it the perfect ending. Like how in Supernatural most people wanted it to end after the Lucifer arc. Or Rurouni Kenshin after the Shishio arc.

Even my favorite shows like Baccano!, FMA(B) and Cowboy Bebop are shows I’m perfectly fine with being ended because they had a good solidified ending (Well, in Baccano!’s case, not really, but it’s meant to end that way, so yeah) and making them go on would probably just tarnish what is there.

However, I have two shows that I really wish were at least given another season. The first one in this regard is Fruits Basket.

Not for that reason! Honest! *cough*

I adore this show and its ending was…….okay, but leaves so much unresolved. We never meet the other two members of the zodiac, Kureno the rooster (though it’s hinted that the bird that Akito has around his house is Kureno given that his transformed state was a sparrow) and Rin the horse, and we never see the curse get lifted.

The only thing that was resolved was Tohru being able to stay with the Sohmas and her seeing Kyo’s true form. Just one more season is all I ask, but alas, my wishes go unheeded.

The second choice here is Ouran High School Host Club.

I’m actually pretty bummed that I haven’t gotten a chance to talk more about this series because it is one of my favorites. The ending of OHSHC is fine. I mean, technically there’s no linear storyline being followed, so the ending is really just a dramatic crescendo, but the ending is okay. I wish this series had continued on at least until their graduation. The fact that the series is mostly comedy with a mostly episodic style makes it a much better candidate for continuation over more dramatic and story driven series. And I really do just love this series to death. None of the characters bug me, practically every joke hits so well, that art and animation are great, the music fantastic and I just wish it had continued on. It may be too early to say it never will continue, but as far as I know there’s no plans for continuation.

And that, my friends is the end of my 30 Day Anime Challenge. It’s been a lot of fun and I even learned some stuff about myself. I always like doing stuff like this so maybe I’ll stumble upon another in the future. Until then, challenge COMPLETED.

30DAC – Day 6: Anime You Want to See But Haven’t Yet

I don’t keep up with new anime, and I hear great stuff about new shows all the time like Kill la Kill, Space Dandy etc. It’s not that I’m some anime hipster who refuses to watch new stuff, it’s just that my method of selection in terms of my watch list is almost entirely random so I can watch a good variety of shows both old and new.

There are both older shows and newer shows that I’m excited to watch, but I think the one I’m most looking forward to is Durarara!

WHAT DO YOU MEAN THERE’S NO ORANGE SODA?!

After enjoying Baccano! So much and knowing that this is both a spiritual successor and takes place in the same universe, I am really looking forward to watching it. Plus, the clips I have seen of it are just insanely awesome. The art is great and really stylized, the animation is very fluid and the characters look very interesting. Plus, it just looks like just as much crazy and dark fun as Baccano! Was, so I can’t wait until I finally get a chance to watch this. Plus, there’s a guy who seems to rip stuff like street signs and cars off the street like they’re pillows and fights with them.

I hate trying to park, too.

As some runners-up, I’d say Code Geass, even though practically all of the show’s been spoiled for me in one way or another, Kanon, Clannad and the Black Jack series.

30 Day Anime Challenge

Greetings everyone!

Just posting an announcement as to my inclusion into a popular challenge going around called the 30 Day Anime Challenge. Apparently there’s a list of 30 prompts asking the person to list and explain their answers to the prompts mostly in regards to that person’s favorite so and so in anime but some other entries such as saddest death and best animation. You’re supposed to come up with an answer to one of the questions, in order, once a day over the course of 30 days. Looks like a difficult yet fun challenge, so I ACCEPT YOUR CHALLENGE, PERSON WHO STARTED THIS.

I decided that I will start this on November 1st because it’s nice enough to have exactly 30 days in it.

hooray

Here’s the challenge listing as reference and if anyone else wants to pick this up, but I will update with an official page to archive the links as well.
