Digimon Adventure 01 Episode 13: Angemon Awakens! | Sub/Dub Comparison

DA01SDCEP13SCREEN9

Plot: The battle with Devimon is reaching its boiling point, and it seems like the Chosen Children are in over their heads. With the power they have, there’s no way they can take down Devimon once and for all. Everything appears to be hopeless, but just when the devil has the team in his grips, an angel appears to save them.

Title Change: Angemon Awakens! is changed to The Legend of the Digidestined.

Takeru originally asks the baby Digimon if they need to poop. In the dub, he says “Okay, so you don’t want to play a game!”

Wow, Yamato/Matt came in from REALLY far away. How did he know Takeru/TK was in danger from that distance?

They remove Ogremon hitting Greymon in the head…..Really, Saban? That little bonk? When Greymon has a skull helmet, even? Use the stupid impact stars if you want, but that didn’t warrant a removal.

DA01SDCEP13SCREEN2

They remove Ogremon hitting Greymon with his Pummel Whack too? That’s a regular attack. Since when are those cut?

DA01SDCEP13SCREEN3

So…..more Black Gears = More evil, bigger and more powerful?….Then why doesn’t Devimon use a bunch of them by default? I’m getting Rita Repulsa flashbacks…

They remove Garurumon smashing into the cliffside.

DA01SDCEP13SCREEN4

But wait, they can show Greymon getting hit and being thrown into the wall? What is even going on right now?

Leomon keeps repeating that he has to kill the Chosen Children. Likewise, when Leomon hears Devimon talking to him in his mind, he reminds him that he was ordered to kill the Chosen Children. In the dub, they change this to ‘Take’ and implications of kidnapping instead.

Originally, they imply that Patamon is either dying or passing out, complete with Takeru yelling at him to hang in there. In the dub, TK reassures Patamon that he did a good job protecting him and Patamon just kinda….sleeps?

This goes without saying, but originally Taichi didn’t call Leomon….Booger Breath…Really, guys? Booger Breath? That’s what you put on the final draft? That gets recorded? That gets seen by dozens of individuals and no one bats an eye? Okay.

I love how they have problems with showing these Digimon taking hits that don’t even leave wounds, but they’ll leave in the rather gross shots of the Black Gears slowly leaving Leomon’s body. You can hear the flesh squishing and everything…

Tai: *after the Black Gears are destroyed* “That’s bad!”….You mean….that’s good?….Or is this another misuse of outdated slang?

Izzy: “It worked! We destroyed the Black Gear!” That should be “They destroyed the Black Gears!”

Originally, Ogremon flees because there are too many Digimon to handle by himself now. In the dub, he goes on about how the kids don’t know who they’re dealing with but they will soon enough.

Leomon: “…That would change good Digimons into bad ones.” Digimon plural is just Digimon. No need for the s.

Taichi originally says that it now makes sense that Leomon keeps calling them ‘The Chosen Children’ once he’s heard the legend of a group of children being chosen to save the Digital World. In the dub, since they change this name to Digidestined, they have Tai exclaim how awesome the legend is, but he wonders if that’s even true.

The other kids and Digimon don’t have a moment of doubt where Taichi needs to coerce them like the dub does. I guess them slightly nodding their heads for three frames lead Saban to thinking they were doing that.

Koushiro doesn’t mention it being ‘impossible’ to lose with the Digivices like Izzy does. You’re a stats man, Izzy. You should know better.

Mimi originally says that she’ll try her best even though she’s scared because she wants to go home. In the dub she says she’ll do some killer shopping when she goes home. Priorities, dub!Mimi.

Palmon originally supports Mimi and says they’ll help her. In the dub, Palmon says they need to send her back before she can shop.

The music in the original is really strange. I don’t really expect western-esque trumpet music right now, especially in an anime.

Tai: “Far out!” Oh come on, now you guys aren’t even trying to stay in the right decade.

I just realized that they seem to give zero shits where Sora and Jo are. Leomon said they need all of the Chosen Children to beat the evil, but they’re heading right into Devimon’s clutches without even mentioning Sora or Jo. This is a criticism of both versions, by the way. Either they’re being ridiculously reckless, they feel like it’s gonna be so easy that they don’t need them to help, or they don’t care….or all of the above.

It’s just weird. You’d think they’d be extra cautious considering this is the literal source of all evil in the Digital World (at the moment anyway) but nah, they can handle it with 5/7 members – one of which can’t even get his Digimon to Adult level.

Devimon…maybe foreshadowed Angemon’s appearance by saying he wanted to destroy the Chosen Children before he appeared. And considering he really wanted Takeru gone first, I’d imagine he did know about Patamon’s evolution…..so….either Devimon wasn’t the evil in the prophecy or they didn’t need any other Chosen Child besides Takeru for this battle (which, as we’ll see, is more or less true.)

They remove a shot where Devimon is kinda strangling Ogremon.

DA01SDCEP13SCREEN6

Koushiro asks if this giant Devimon could be an illusion, and Leomon responds by saying no. In the dub, Izzy says “Bad guys always seem to think bigger is better.” and Leomon says “’fraid not!”……..What?

Izzy: “My biology teacher would love this!”…Uhm…Okay I get what he’s talking about, but why did it take so long for Izzy to say that when he’s seen so many Digivolutions already? Especially when he’s talking about Kabuterimon? Also, why are you guys making stupid jokes when you’re literally fighting the source of all evil?

Mimi: “I do like the way our colors match.” Ahh….Mimi….Please.

They remove Leomon getting hit by Ogremon’s club and Ogremon taunting him for believing Devimon would leave his back exposed as well as the further shot of Leomon on the ground.

DA01SDCEP13SCREEN7

Hahaha! I love how Ogremon shot Leomon into a treeline, but it left a hole like he was thrust into a rockface.

DA01SDCEP13SCREEN8

So…yeah, Angemon is the antithesis to Devimon so, even though Devimon’s so powerful that all of the other Adult level Digimon can’t even touch him, Angemon is a threat to him. As cool as I always thought Angemon’s debut was, as much as I love Angemon as a whole, and as tragic as his ‘death’ was, in hindsight, that really is kinda bullshit. I mean, at least this is a reprieve from the typical ‘leader (and deuteragonist) get the best stuff’ trope that this series will definitely embrace as time goes on, but it was literally that they only needed to guard Takeru and ensure Patamon could evolve instead of it being a full team effort to take down Devimon.

Dub!Devimon: “They say the smallest will destroy me.” Oh thanks, Saban. For a second I thought you were going to omit all the foreshadowing and try to be subtle, but specifically adding in a line where he basically admits TK and Patamon are the key to his defeat is totally brilliant and not stupid.

Okay, so you’re telling me you can’t show Greymon, dude with a helmet, getting bonked on the head or Leomon getting bonked on the head….but you can show Greymon, Ikkakumon and Kabuterimon biting the fuck out of Devimon? They really are thinking it’s more okay to show bad guys getting hit than it is to see heroes get hit…..

Originally, Taichi weakly called out to Greymon and Greymon apologized to Taichi. In the dub, Tai says nothing and Greymon comments on how tough Devimon is.

In the original, Togemon says ‘I wanted to send you back to your world, but….’ to Mimi, who if off-screen. In the dub, she says she can’t move and even her needles are numb.

So, in the dub, was TK calling out for Matt while unconscious/passed out?

Ya know, I joked in the last episode comparison about getting out tissues, but I was joking. I didn’t really think I’d start tearing up when the finale started. Angemon hasn’t even come out quite yet and I’m getting choked up. Jeez…

Originally, Mimi says Angemon looks like an angel….Yup…..yup….that’s uh….good observation there, Mimi. Of course, she manages to be even dumber in the dub where she says “Nice hair. Good color.” You know your Digimon is lying on the ground in agony right now?

Takeru only points out that Patamon evolved. In the dub, TK says “I wanna take him home with me!” which is….I was gonna say stupid…which it kinda is, but it’s also just kinda weird. For what reason do you want to take home an eight foot tall angel with a helmet over his face?

Angemon can just summon the powers of all the Digivices and use them to attack Devimon? I’m getting Tokyo Mew Mew flashbacks now. So, really, the way that all of the Chosen Children play into this finale is only through their Digivices, not the kids themselves or their Digimon? Come on.

Devimon originally curses himself because he was so close to killing Takeru and Patamon before Angemon came to be. In the dub, he just acts as if he doesn’t know of Angemon and isn’t a threat to him, which we already know doesn’t make sense given how Saban wrote this.

Devimon tells Angemon that he won’t get off so easily either if he uses that power on him, implying that Angemon will also die along with him. In the dub, Devimon says he can’t take his power so easily and he’ll have to fight him for it….Uh…1) That’s what he’s doing. 2) He’s not trying to take your power, he’s trying to kill you.

Angemon’s responses, implying that he’s ready to die if it will stop him, is kept the same, which is weird because the dub lost the setup to that response.

Oh my god…Saban, why? They added lightsaber sound effects to Angemon’s staff when he was absorbing its power into his fist….why….why?

Angemon says “I’m sorry, Takeru.” In the dub, he says “I’ll get him, relax.” I don’t much care for that line change because it goes from a somber moment to basically Angemon telling Takeru to chill out just because he told him to be careful.

Attack Name Change: Heaven’s Knuckle is…well, it’s going to be changed to Hand of Fate, but as of this episode, he only says “I’ll stop you! AYYYEEEEEH!”

Oh yeah, and they’ll also show Devimon getting impaled by Angemon’s attack, but Greymon can’t be shown taking an energy attack to the chin.

Ugh…I know Saban redoes lines when there’s a commercial break, like 4Kids does, even if it’s a very confusing and stupid practice. Here, they’re using the same dialogue, but after the commercial break it’s like they went for a worse take on how the VA was saying it. Before the commercial, he had some decent emotion in the lines. Afterwards, it’s like he was just reading them off the script for rehearsal.

I really don’t like the way TK pronounces “Angemon” because it kinda sounds like he’s saying “Angiemon” which I think I’ve talked about before in the Adventure 02 SDC, but I feel like I should backpedal because even though that’s not the way it’s pronounced….it does make sense. When you say “Angel” you say it like “Eyn-jel” But when you say the “Ange” part in Angemon you say “Ann-jah” like in Angela, or you say ‘ahn-jah’. Still bothers me a tiny bit, but I won’t harp on it if it makes sense.

Ogremon originally wonders if the kids defeated Devimon. In the dub, he says that, with Devimon gone, he can take over now, which is obviously BS that Leomon stamps out before he even takes a step.

While both versions of Mimi say they don’t want to fight anymore, dub!Mimi adds “Oh, I think I broke a nail.” Seriously, guys? You’re going with the ridiculously overdone “I broke a nail” girl trope?

——————————-

Overall, I’ve always really loved this episode, and I still do. I was being serious when I said I was tearing up at the finale. I didn’t expect to, but it managed to get me again.

I still do believe it was a teeny tiny bit bunk that Angemon was able to defeat Devimon while absolutely none of the other Adult level Digimon could even scratch him. I get the parallels – angel vs. devil – I get that he had to use the power of the Digivices, and I get that he sacrificed his life for it, but it’s still the slightest bit bogus.

And, believe it or not, this situation is basically going to be mirrored near the end of the series, except Angemon doesn’t die there and it’s a bit more of a team effort.

As confusing as Patamon’s evolution line is, I adore it all. I own nearly all of his forms as toys. He’s always been one of my favorite Digimon ever.

His evolution scene was epic and heartbreaking at the same time. Like everyone else, he did evolve to protect his partner, but the buildup to it was quite sad because Patamon wanted to evolve so badly so he could protect Takeru. He had no chance in his Child form. Oddly, Patamon actually seems like the weakest Child level Digimon but the most powerful Adult level.

Compare that to the plotline in Adventure 02 where V-mon wanted to evolve to Adult, even though Armor evolving was seen as kinda better, all because he and Davis were jealous of Takeru and Angemon and their symmetry with Hikari and Angewomon.

Well, you can put away your hankies for now, Angemon/Patamon will return in due time. It will take quite a while, but he’ll be back. Until then, it’s off to even bigger threats.

Next time, the kids meet Gennai and learn what they must do to combat the next evil threat that is looming over the Digital World.

Digimon Adventure 01: Episode 12 – Adventure! Patamon and I Sub/Dub Comparison

DigimonA01EP12SCREEN1

Plot: Takeru and Patamon arrive at The Village of Beginnings, which houses hundreds of baby Digimon and Digieggs. As Takeru and Patamon care for the eggs and babies, slowly falling into chaos as they cry, their caretaker, Elecmon, appears to defend them. He gets into a fight with Patamon, and tensions increase. Can Takeru help them put aside their differences?

——————————–

Title Card: DigimonA01EP12SCREEN2

Title Change: Adventure! Patamon and I is changed to DigiBaby Boom.

Truthfully, I’m not a fan of either title, but I’d say the dub’s is a bit better.

TK’s imaginary ‘Porkymon’ was originally ‘It’s-Probably-Like-This-mon.’ Saban should’ve at least removed the English text in the corner of the fake Index screen that has its literal name of TabunKonnamon.

They remove a shot of the cartoon pig turning around after it shakes its butt at the camera….Dunno why they’d remove that but not the butt shaking.

DigimonA01EP12SCREEN3

TK’s Hogmon was originally KittoKonnamon, which is ‘It-Must-Be-Like-This-mon’ Again, the English name in the corner is left alone. Also, nitpicky, but the animal Takeru is referencing is clearly a hippo, not another pig.

I know it’s excusable because they’re so far away, but the walk cycle, if you can even call it that, on Takeru when they first enter the village is horrific,

The Village of Beginnings is changed to Primary Village. As much as I’ve gotten used to the dub name, the original’s name is quite beautiful.

The first introduction to The Village of Beginnings is really quiet and sweet with only a gentle music box tune playing. In the dub, not only do we have the typical doopy travel music, but we also have TK’s obnoxious dialogue about getting cotton candy etc. over it. TK, I love ya kid, but your voice is one I’ve never been fond of, at least in little kid form.

In the original, Takeru’s first line into the village is ‘It’s so pretty!’ and he and Patamon gaze in wonder. In the dub, they’re still blathering about candy, which further ruins the moment.

Oddly, the original has a bowling ball hitting pins noise when Takeru and Patamon tumble over the hill. In the dub, this is omitted. Usually, it’s the opposite.

Takeru says the floor feels like a bed. In the dub, he says it feels like marshmallows.

I saw this joke coming. The dub has TK make a joke about Punimon being ‘Puny.’ He’s just making noises of awe in the original.

Yuramon’s voice is way too deep in the dub. It’s a baby, guys, not a ten year old.

Takeru’s comment about Devimon also starting as an egg makes me think. If Digimon never die, their information just get reconfigured, does that mean that every evil Digimon who has been defeated by the Chosen Children could, theoretically, return as eggs and then grow back up to conquer the Digital World again?

Patamon: “It’s Digicode!”

DigimonA01EP12SCREEN4

Oh come on. Digimon, I usually praise you for keeping a good chunk of the Japanese text on screen. Now you’re claiming it’s some gibberish ‘Digicode’ because you’re too lazy to throw some digital paint on this note? Don’t pull a Pokemon on me.

What’s even dumber is that there actually IS a Digimon language called Digicode (or DigiMoji or DigiLetters) and it, predictably, looks nothing like this.

DigimonA01EP12SCREEN7

Haven’t we kinda gone over this too? In Kabuterimon’s debut episode and the episode with Mimi in the maze? Unless they’re saying Japanese text looks like DigiCode just because ‘Oooh weird squiggles all look the same’ in which case, wow, way to be racist.

TK: *Rubbing a DigiEgg* “Maybe a digital genie will come out.” TK….goddammit, you’re not this dumb.

Also, nice that you guys accidentally put the background egg layer on top of Takeru’s layer while animating the second rub.

DigimonA01EP12SCREEN5

TK: “I’m gonna wish for a new skateboard!” TK…..please shut up.

Originally, he just keeps talking about rubbing the egg.

TK, you don’t need to be narrating every step of the flashback. We can easily see what’s happening for ourselves. Also, in the original, you can’t hear what kid!Yamato is saying. In the dub, he says ‘Atta boy!’

Elecmon’s Index screen is more involved in the original. The narrator states that Elecmon is a very inquisitive Digimon who loves playing pranks. He also spreads his tail feathers like a peacock to threaten enemies. In the dub, Elecmon is doing his own Index screen and he says he’s the caretaker of baby Digimon ‘so don’t cross wires with me!’

Attack Name Change: Sparkling Thunder is changed to Super Thunder Strike.

I don’t know why I’m mentioning this, but the Pabumon makes a fart noise before Takeru checks if it messed itself. In the dub, it doesn’t.

It really bothers me that none of these baby Digimon sound like babies in the dub. They’re not even trying.

Again, the baby Digimon layers in the background are overlapping on top of Takeru. Animators, wake up please.

DigimonA01EP12SCREEN6

Originally, Elecmon says Takeru and Patamon were ‘coddling’ the babies. They ask why that’s a bad thing, and he says ‘coddling’ means both ‘petting’ and ‘bullying’ and he meant the latter. In the dub, he says they were playing with the babies. TK asks why that has anything to do with him, and Elecmon explains that he’s the caretaker of all of the baby Digimon.

The way Dub!Patamon says “Now, now, don’t get all puffy!” is weird.

In the original, Takeru just says “Stop…” quietly to himself before we see the Digivice reacting slightly. In the dub, he says ‘This is very bad! He’s Digivolving!’

That line makes no sense. First of all, he prefaced the declaration with “This is very bad” meaning he can’t be implying Patamon is Digivolving because….that’d be good.

Second, how does he know either of them is even close to Digivolving? Neither is glowing, and TK can’t see his Digivice right now.

Third, if he somehow can see his Digivice reacting and is claiming a Digivolution would be a bad thing, he’s somehow inferring that his Digivice reactions are about to make Elecmon Digivolve.

The only way this would make sense is if TK were afraid of Patamon Digivolving, which we’ve proven that he isn’t.

Takeru is quietly and sadly scolding Patamon and Elecmon for fighting. In the dub, he’s yelling at them.

Dub!Elecmon’s lips are clearly not moving when he says “Hmph, my fur looks fine!” Dialogue when there originally was none should only be used when the speaking character is off-screen, guys.

In the original, Takeru is announcing the match as a traditional sumo match. He calls the corners ‘east’ and ‘west’ and gives Elecmon and Patamon titles like ‘Elecmon of the Vast Sea’ and ‘Patamon of the Large Mountain.’ He’s even doing the inflection properly. In the dub, TK basically announces this like a pro wrestling match. He just says ‘that corner’ and ‘the other corner’, and he calls Elecmon ‘the defending champion’ and Patamon ‘The most excellent Digimon’ which is funny because he chose this format specifically so they could fight fairly, but calling Patamon essentially the best is clearly playing favorites.

The dub is just weird because you lose the joke entirely. You’re left wondering why the hell TK is wearing that getup and why Patamon and Elecmon are wearing those cloths. The joke is lost even further because it’s supposed to be a tone shift from traditional and serious to a childish game of tug-of-war. But in the dub, the tone is kept consistent.

It’s also funny because this is one of those 4Kids-y moments where they’re missing the forest for the trees. “Oh no, kids! Those squiggly lines aren’t Japanese text – they’re Digicode! Now here’s TK in a gyoji outfit waving around a gunbai while Elecmon and Patamon sport custom mawashis.”

Another scene where the tone is completely ruined? Oh joy. In the original, the tone of the scene changes from tense to very gentle as feathers rain down on Primary Village before Patamon is declared winner. In the dub, they keep the tense tone, so the feathers just seem like an odd addition. The change in tone is meant to help signify the new respect Patamon and Elecmon have for each other, which makes the shift kinda awkward in the dub.

Oh good, another scene where the tone is completely ruined, and this time by a stupid and kinda terrible joke. In the original, Takeru says fighting between friends is okay as a kid because you make up quickly. Then he says ‘Fighting between adults….’ which is hinting at his parents fighting.

From this one line we can tell that Takeru was likely upset at Patamon and Elecmon fighting because it reminded him of his parents. As you’ll recall, Takeru and Yamato’s parents are divorced, and Takeru probably remembers hearing a lot of fighting, even though he was pretty young when they split.

In the dub, TK retains the line about kids patching things up quickly, but says that adults don’t forgive as easily because his parents are still mad at him for that one time when he painted their cat. Uhm, considering that can really hurt an animal, I’d say they have a right to hold a grudge, TK.

So, not only do we lose a nice subtle line that explains a great deal about why Takeru was so upset, but we also make TK out as an animal abuser who is pretty much implying that his parents are overreacting to his cat-painting actions….

In the original, as Elecmon is looking around The Village of Beginnings, he tells Patamon an old saying, ‘A grain of pepper may be tiny, but it’s still sharp on the tongue.’ Patamon mistakes ‘pepper’ for ‘pansy’ and believes Elecmon has eaten pansies before.

In the dub, Patamon messes up an idiom of his own by saying ‘You can’t judge a cover by its book’ and Elecmon tells him to forget the sayings for a minute while he tells him something. Then we get a kinda Lion King-esque reference as Elecmon claims all of Primary Village will be Patamon’s some day and acts like he’s his dad? I get that we don’t really have that original old saying in America, but you can still use it and have Patamon mishear it. It’s not like it’s one of those untranslatable jokes.

Elecmon originally gets straight to the point in saying that Devimon’s on Infinity Mountain. In the dub, he says a bunch of stuff about how the terrain is dangerous and they need climbing gear before TK interrupts by mentioning Devimon. Also, it never ceases to amaze me how the dub both expects us to believe these Digimon are clueless about human things yet they know about stuff like climbing gear.

Takeru says he knows something great will happen when their hearts become one. In the dub, TK goes on a tirade about laughing and friendship. The tone is the same, but it’s like TK’s not making a point in the dub.

This is strange. In the original, Elecmon calls the area near Pyokomon Village ‘Gear Savannah’ but in the dub, he calls it ‘Gea Savannah’ with a long A sound. You’d think at least ‘Savannah’ would be pronounced with a short A sound, though. A long one is probably correct, but short is typically the pronunciation in America.

The narrator has some time during the long shot of the sea to give a monologue about the upcoming battle that is topped off by seeing a small flurry of feathers, which is a cute nod to Angemon’s impending debut. In the dub, Devimon is talking over a good chunk of the first part, then we get a commercial break, then the rest of the scene is silent, making the feathers meaningless.

————————————–

I have to say, I’m a little torn about this episode. In the original, the episode is pretty cute and is a good prelude to what’s about to come, but I also feel it was kinda cheesy and a little boring. The baby Digimon are cute but get a little annoying, and the whole plot with Patamon and Elecmon felt slightly forced and under-written. If Patamon’s so mature, he should’ve just explained that they found a note telling them to hatch eggs and they felt compelled to care for the babies when they started crying. If it was such a problem, he should’ve offered to leave.

Elecmon, harsh as though it may be, was perfectly within his rights to attack because they were intruders touching his babies and letting them run loose all over the village. For all he knew, they really were attacking them since they were all crying. He should’ve heard them out a bit more, but that’s all.

The one being treated as the unreasonable one is Elecmon and no one else. Elecmon’s the one who has to learn a lesson, and he learns it through tug of war. It’s not like he even realized something about Patamon during the match or when he hit the block. It was literally them playing tug of war, him losing, then Elecmon’s all smiles and giving Patamon a bunch of praise before he apologizes. Patamon never apologizes even though, in my opinion, he was technically more in the wrong.

And don’t get me started on the animation. There’s no excuse for the layering thing to happen twice, and the overall animation is on the lower end of the spectrum for this show.

The dub is a mess of bad jokes and ruined tones. The whole meaning of the episode almost ends up getting lost because it’s like Saban completely missed the point or didn’t care. The dub is basically a hollow shell because of it.

Also, even though they have a decent amount of Takeru and Patamon bonding, I think the episode should’ve been more focused on their friendship, considering what’s to come, rather than focusing so much on Elecmon and The Village of Beginnings. Yamato and Gabumon had way more development in their episode than Patamon and Takeru did here.

Not to mention, now that I’m older, how glaringly obvious is the hanging thread of ‘We’ll be best friends forever!’? That’s almost as bad as telling someone you love them before heading off alone in a horror movie.

Next episode, one the preview just completely ruins from start to finish, Angemon’s debut! Ready your tissues.

Digimon Adventure 01 Episode 10 Sub/Dub Comparison: Kentarumon The Defender

DA01SDCS1

Plot: Koushiro has found some ruins which bear the same markings as the power plant they were in before. He decides to forego looking for his friends in order to decipher the markings and maybe find a way back home. Meanwhile, Mimi finds Koushiro soon enough but also quickly grows tired of his inconsideration in finding the others and finding food. She runs off into the ruins with Tentomon, and the ruins turn out to be a giant maze. Can Koushiro’s work on the marking help them get out or will the Black Geared Kentarumon get to them first?

——————————————————–

Title Screen: DA01SDCS4

Title Change: Kentarumon the Defender is changed to A Clue from the Digi-Past.

Koushiro just points out that the island is breaking apart. Izzy basically explains in the nerdiest detail possible what is currently happening to them at the moment.

Original Mimi doesn’t talk about the humidity of the jungle nor its effects on her hair. She merely wonders where they are. Additionally, Mimi doesn’t hope for air conditioning as they walk away.

Mimi and Koushiro really do seem like they’re the most apt to get line changes, outside of maybe Jo. Mimi’s lines are almost always changed, and at the very least Koushiro’s are loaded with lots of brainy jargon that not even the smartest child would ever put into their regular vernacular.

Oh great, it’s the introduction of…them. Sukamon and Chuumon….Oy. Sukamon and Chuumon are a pair of Digimon who are always together. Chuumon is a Digimon who looks like a rat that was drawn and animated by a crack addict. Sukamon is….a talking pile of shit.

No. I’m not kidding. He is a golden pile of shit with arms and a goofy face as well as the weird addition of punk accessories. Think I’m reading too much into his design? Well, he lives in the sewer. No? How about I add his ever so charming list of attacks.

“Smash” is innocent enough, but then we have “Bomber” also known literally as “Poop throw” “Dappun Pheromone” or defecation pheromone, and I’m pretty sure you can judge for yourself what that one does. Finally, we just have simply “Poop.” Yup. He actually has an attack called “Poop.”

But what makes me dislike these guys is that they’re constantly hitting on Mimi, which is weird enough considering they’re Digimon, way weirder considering they’re a rat and a pile of crap, but we’re also meant to kinda….revere them later.

Spoiler alert, they sacrifice themselves for Mimi way later in the series and it’s meant to be a lesson in not judging a book by its cover. Or not judging a pile of crap by its….smell or something. And they even get brought back to life later on because Digimon and they even make another appearance later in Digimon Adventure 02, still hitting on Mimi.

They may mean well when it counts, and I give them their due respect to a certain degree for their sacrifice, but they’re still extremely annoying little Digimon that I never liked and every second without them on screen the better.

Palmon originally doesn’t say that Chuumon and Sukamon are also known as the ‘Digi-losers’, which, no matter how I feel about them, is a dick thing to say. Originally, she just says they’re always together.

Also, the dub does everything in their power to avert the fact that 1) Sukamon is poop and 2) that he throws poop. The narrator even says during Sukamon’s Index screen analysis that he looks like a golden poop, but in the dub they don’t say this.

Sukamon originally says he feels like a good poop now. In the dub, he just says they’ll be nice now.

The ruins are in the ancient dino region in the original. They don’t mention the area name in the dub.

Sukamon and Chuumon originally ask for a date. In the dub, they ask for a kiss.

Izzy: “Ya know what I think? If we stop this gear from moving, we’ll completely jam that creep up!” Izzy, how did you go from spouting techno-babble every five seconds, including overly complicating the sentence “I’m looking for a door.” to changing ‘If we stop this gear, I bet the island will stop moving.’ to that?

Mimi: “Let’s just hope that kissy face lemon custard was telling the truth.” Sweetie, you don’t want to eat that lemon custard…..trust….me.

Mimi repeats herself and asks if anything beneficial will come of him deciphering the characters on the wall. Dub!Mimi says her butt’s getting cold from sitting on the ground doing nothing.

Original!Mimi doesn’t call Koushiro a ‘computer geek pipsqueak’ like dub!Mimi does.

Koushiro says Mimi and Palmon’s crying is only being a bother. Izzy asks what he can do to stop them from crying since his laptop can’t do everything. I’m not really sure which line is more aggravating. Izzy is usually one of my favorite characters, but he annoys the hell out of me in this episode.

DA01SDCS2

Original!Mimi says she’s hungry, thirsty and wants to see her friends. Dub!Mimi also says she’s hungry, but then she says her feet are killing her and a giant lemon custard tried to kiss her. Mimi, please, never think of eating a lemon custard again, for your own health.

Dub!Mimi says she misses her house, her bathtub and that she’s even missing her baby brother. Originally, Mimi just says she can’t stand to listen to any more arguing. Also, side note, Mimi doesn’t have a baby brother in the original. I dunno why they thought it’d be a good idea to act as if she does. Did they think we’d never meet her family? Because we do later on….

Tentomon tries to defend Koushiro by saying he may lack charm, but he’s not a bad boy. Mimi then says that, despite that, he still has no consideration for her. In the dub, Tentomon tries to suggest ways to get out of the maze, but Mimi asks why she should listen to him since he’s friends with Izzy and he’s the reason they’re in the maze…..Nooooo, the reason you’re in the maze is because you had a little temper tantrum like a four-year-old and wouldn’t listen to reason no matter what. Izzy is the reason you’re upset, yes, and he was acting cold and inconsiderate, but he’s not the reason you’re lost.

Kentarumon originally makes no noise. Koushiro is the one who warns them of a being following them and tells them to run. In the dub, Centarumon laughs evilly, Tentomon hears it and alerts Mimi to it while Izzy is silent through the scene.

Tentomon neglects to mention in the Digimon Index Screen that Centarumon can run at the speed of sound thanks to air propulsion devices in his back.

Koushiro knocked down a solid stone wall…with a rock the size of a soccer ball?….Uh…huh.

DA01SDCS3

So the Digivices are based on an ancient design…..Then why do they change through each series? You’d think if they lasted thousands of years with the same design that they wouldn’t need a makeover every few years.

Izzy: “Whoa, time’s standing still here!”….Uh….No….it’s not…They’re just standing still.

Attack Name Change: Hunting Cannon is changed to Solar Ray.

Leomon: “The children must be…destroyed!”

Mimi: “Nooooooo!! You must mean some other children!” So you’d rather Leomon go off killing some other kids? Nice.

Mimi: “Bad kitty! Out! Go on, out!” *sigh*

————————————-

Well, I…..really don’t like this episode…..at all. Izzy’s being an inconsiderate ass who actually doesn’t seem to care where his friends are or even if they’re okay. I know Izzy loves mysteries and figuring stuff out. I know he also has a habit of getting lost in his own head, which is something that will be addressed much later, but here he’s putting all of that over the safety and well-being of his friends. That’s a bit too far. I’ll be a bit lenient with him considering this is just a character flaw that he’ll eventually overcome, but that doesn’t make his behavior in this episode any less annoying to watch.

Meanwhile, Mimi’s being an ultra whiny little spoiled brat in this episode, and it’s not made at all better by the fact that she’s the one who’s mostly right in this situation, but they’re both in the wrong.

This was the debut of the annoying literal sacks of crap, Sukamon and Chuumon, and you know how I feel about that. The maze thing wasn’t that interesting with only one trap being seen and it was just a boring pitfall trap. I do like Kentarumon, and it was nice to get some insight into the Digivices but that was about it.

Also, reversing the rotation on the gear by kicking it? That’s a bit too silly. If Devimon’s devices can be tampered with that easily, he really sucks at this evil villain thing.

Next up, we find out what Jo and Sora are up to. They come across a weird festival being put on by the ghost Digimon Bakemon and end up getting themselves captured by the ghouls.

Digimon Adventure 01 Sub/Dub Comparison – Episode 9: Clash! The Freezing Digimon

Plot: Everyone has been separated and sent to several moving islands. Taichi and Agumon confront a Yukidarumon, who has a Black Gear within him. After defeating him and removing his Black Gear, Yukidarumon uses his ice abilities to get Taichi and Agumon to the area where he saw Yamato and Gabumon fall.

Meanwhile, Yamato and Gabumon are stuck on an snowy island, and Yamato forces himself through the cold to search for Takeru. After some prodding to get Yamato to rest and graciously offering him his fur to keep him warm, Yamato and Gabumon make it through the night. The next morning, they meet up with Taichi and Agumon.

Taichi’s desire to find the other side of the world that Devimon was talking about angers Yamato as he believes their one focus should be finding Takeru and the others. They end up getting in a fist fight only to be interrupted by a Black Geared Mojyamon.

———————————

Title Screen:

Title Change: Clash! The Freezing Digimon is changed to Subzero Ice Punch….Wow, way to work those creativity muscles, Saban.

There’s no narration from Taichi in the beginning of the episode.

I don’t know why, but the dub adds in this old-timey car horn sound when Tai and Agumon hit the glacier.

Tai: “Hey my clothes! Only now they’re too cool even for me now.”

Agumon: “Don’t worry Tai I can give you the next hot look!” *Pepper Breaths the clothes to melt the ice*

Punzzzzzzzzzthatweren’tpresentintheoriginal.

Taichi doesn’t mention anything about the mailboxes, probably because he’s now used to seeing stuff that looks like it’s from human civilization that doesn’t work or belong in the Digital World. Tai does mention the boxes and talks about how it’s possible that people did live there at one point….while it’s perfectly clear that his mouth isn’t moving.

Taichi asks Agumon about the area on the other side of the ocean that Devimon was talking about, but Agumon has never heard of it or been there before. Tai says he doesn’t know the Digital World any better than Agumon because he’s never been to the Digital World before.

Name Change: Yukidarumon is changed to Frigimon.

What is up with Agumon’s voice when he’s giving the info for Frigimon? His voice sounds slower, lower and distorted. I know it’s not my copy of the episode, it’s just weird dubbing for some reason.

Attack Name Change: Zettai Reido Punch is changed to Subzero Ice Punch, though to be honest they got it very close considering that the translation of the attack is Absolute Zero Punch. They would’ve gotten it perfect if not for the fact that subzero implies less than absolute zero…

This is in both versions, but why is Yukidarumon/Frigimon constantly repeating his name? He’s a Digimon not a Pokemon.

I hate Frigimon’s dub voice. He sounds so dorky. He kinda sounds like Dom Delouise when he’s not even trying.

Tai: “We’re trapped like ice mice!” Wow, you guys really reached for that one. Also, doesn’t that poor attempt at a joke really not work when the saying is technically ‘trapped like rats’?

Logically, if you can barely lift something (in this case Agumon) then wouldn’t you have to have insanely strong legs to kick that same something around like a soccer ball?

Those Black Gears really suck if they can be destroyed with a Rookie level Digimon’s attack, even at point-blank range.

This is the second time that the dub has had the ‘good thing we’re alone out here/no evil Digimon around’ then, boom, evil Digimon appears’ shtick in this episode. They’ll be fine, though, because what could possibly go wrong?

After the seriously oddly placed commercial break for the dub, they repeat the shot of Agumon talking while pointing, making his statement of ‘Gabumon!’ seem weird.

I overlook a lot of dialogue and sounds that they add in the dub where there is none, but they add a teeth chattering sound when Matt wakes up. I just found this notable because Gabumon gave Yamato his fur to keep him warm through the night and it seems dumb to make a sound that still gives off the vibe that he’s terribly cold when Gabumon made such a sacrifice to prevent that.

The shot of Yamato thanking Gabumon and him responding is drawn and animated so strangely. Why are Yamato’s eyes wide open? Why does Gabumon look stoned?

Also, Yamato says that he hates to say it but he’s feeling completely better (yet Gabumon caught his cold) In the dub, Matt adds that Gabumon must look pretty funny without his fur on.

Okay, neither version makes sense here. In the original, Taichi says “So even Digimon can catch colds, huh?” In the dub, Tai asks Gabumon how he caught the cold with so much fur. Yamato/Matt then yells at him to stop making fun of Gabumon…..How is that making fun of Gabumon in either version?

He learned Digimon can catch human viruses in the original – a statement of fact, not an insult. He wonders how, out of all them, Gabumon was the one who caught a cold since he has so much fur. A little insensitive, but also not insulting. I don’t get why Yamato/Matt flew off the handle like that other than, well, he needed to, because conflict.

Oh and, dub-wise, Matt said he bets Gabumon looks really funny without his fur on, which actually IS making fun of Gabumon, so there ya go.

Yamato says he’ll swim if he has to in order to find the others. Matt says they’ll just ask Frigimon for more help.

Again, in both versions, the shot of Yamato/Matt running is repeated and sped up once then sped up more in the next repeat. I guess this is to show how fast Yamato’s trying to run or how determined he is to find Takeru and the others, but it just looks really sloppy. Pointless too considering Taichi catches up without problem in the next shot.

Ah a scene removal. Taichi and Yamato exchange several blows before the shot cuts to Agumon and Gabumon trying to stop them. In the dub, they remove the shots of the boys punching each other and only show them rolling around in the snow. Because of this change, the talking shot of Agumon and Gabumon is repeated in the dub.

Taichi says he won’t let go of Yamato even if it means they both die. In the dub, he just tells Matt to not let go no matter what.

The dub’s Digimon Index screen, this time voiced by Agumon in the dub, excludes the part about Mojyamon being a very rare animal Digimon who lives deep in the mountains.

Attack Name Change: Icicle Rod is changed to Ice Club

Gabumon screams because the herbs are bitter. He doesn’t explain why he’s screaming in the dub.

Attack Name Change: Bone Bone Boomerang is changed to Boomerang Bone….*shrug*

Like usual, the post-evolution vocal song is removed in lieu of the same BG music.

Garurumon destroys the Black Gears in the mountain since he saw them as being an obstacle to Yamato and Takeru finding each other. He doesn’t say this in the dub.

Gabumon, for some reason, believes Devimon is the one making the Black Gears reverse direction when it was clearly his attack that affected them in that way.

Taichi says he’s sure that Takeru is doing his best, and Yamato agrees stating that he is his little brother after all. In the dub, Tai says they won’t let any Black Gears stop them and Matt agrees. Technically, this dialogue is kinda kept in a dub-exclusive narration by Matt in the very ending. He states that he knows TK will be be alright because he has Patamon to protect him, which, while having a similar sentiment, is really putting more hope in Patamon (foreshadowing?) than faith in TK’s abilities.

——————————-

All in all this episode was…….Meh. I dunno, I feel like maybe this episode would’ve worked better as two separate episodes. Not a lot goes on, and it’s becoming really apparent that Digimon with the Black Gears aren’t as much of a threat as they used to be, especially considering that one was defeated with merely a Child/Rookie level Digimon in the first half.

Taichi’s half didn’t really have much in it at all. He landed on an island, fought Yukidarumon, then went to the island Yamato landed on.

Yamato’s half obviously had more do to with his concern over Takeru and obsession with finding him as well as his nice moments with Gabumon. I think him butting heads with Taichi was pretty forced, even if it’s obvious that Yamato’s really snippy today.

The art and animation are also particularly awful in this episode for some reason. While I find Yukidarumon fine, I always found Frigimon to be….nice, but his voice just is really off-putting, especially when he’s trying to battle. That voice yelling ‘Frigimon!’ is just laughable.

Next episode, we find out what Izzy and Mimi are up to. They find themselves in what seems like a temple only to be met with a Centarumon who has a black gear.

Digimon Adventure 01 Sub/Dub Comparison Episode 8

DIGIMONSDCEP8title

Plot: After discovering that they’re truly on an island with no escape, the kids meet Ogremon, a Digimon known as being a brute, and Leomon, who is supposedly to be a kindhearted and gentle leader Digimon teaming up to kill them. Devimon, the evil Digimon behind the Black Gears, discovers that the kids are too powerful together and concocts a plan to separate them. After escaping from Leomon and Ogremon, the kids discover a mansion in the woods and enjoy their sudden stroke of luck despite the fears of a trap because everyone, especially the Digimon, are completely exhausted. However, their fears were realized when it proves to be nothing but a trap of Devimon’s making.

—————————-

Title Screen: DIGIMONSDCEP8SCREEN1

Title Change: The Messenger of Darkness, Devimon! is changed to Evil Shows His Face.

While Digimon has a lot of jokes and dialogue where there is none in the original, I’ll note this one because there’s a mistake made in the dubbing. At the very start of the episode, there’s no dialogue until they see Jo on the cliff. In the dub, Joe says this place would be a lot better with a bus system, and Matt agrees, but believes they’re at the end of the line.

The reason this is a mistake is because the only people in Matt’s group right now are Izzy, Mimi, TK and himself. Joe, Tai and Sora are at the cliff. So there’s no way for Joe to have been saying that to Matt while he was climbing up the cliff. That just seems so sloppy considering how obvious it is that Joe is not with the group right now. They could’ve made Matt or Mimi say the line about the bus and have Izzy or Matt respond.

Jo just yells “What do we do now?!’ while Joe complains that he never wanted to go to summer camp and instead wanted to go to summer school.

The narrator, as usual, does the Digimon index screens for Leomon and Ogremon. In the dub, since none of the kids are around, Leomon does Ogremon’s screen and vice versa.

Leomon: “The black gears are turning perfectly peaceful innocent Digimon into monsters!” Uhh….maybe you should’ve come up with a different term….Digimon…Digital MONSTERS. Just sayin’.

Attack Name Change: Ogremon’s fist attack is called Haouken (Fist of the Supreme King).

Attack Name Change: Leomon’s fist attack is called Juuouken (Fist of the Beast King). I never heard Ogremon’s translated attack name in the dub I don’t believe, but the dub commonly calls Leomon’s its translated attack name.

Also, in the original, the two actually call out their attacks when they first fight. In the dub, they just grunt.

Attack Name Change: Death Claw is changed to Touch of Evil.

This line was kinda cool. Devimon originally tells Leomon to accept his ‘baptism of evil’. In the dub, he just says he’ll now obey Devimon’s every command.

Also, I like Devimon’s original voice a lot better. His original voice is eerily calm and even while his dubbed voice is typically evil villain gravelly yelling.

Matt: “No question, man. You are the dude of doodles!”……What does that even mean?

Mimi originally asks why things had to turn out like this. In the dub, she said she just realizes that her gloves don’t match her dress….Yup, that’s Mimi for ya.

Likewise, Palmon only says “Mimi” after this line. In the dub, Palmon says, seriously mind you, “How sad.”

You know, I really like how the kids and Digimon still have trust in Digimon that they’ve known to be good, friendly and trustworthy in the past, but this has been nearly every episode. Unimon, Monzaemon, Meramon, Andromon; they should really take the sudden appearance of a supposedly friendly and kind Digimon as a red flag at this point.

Why is Matt specifically telling Joe to not slow down in the dub? He’s at the front of the group. If anything, he should be telling that to Tai considering he’s last and he just went back for a bit to try to get his dumb map.

Takeru asks if Ogremon is another supposedly kind Digimon, but Patamon and Gomamon state that he’s actually a bad guy either way. In the dub, this is replaced by jokes about Ogremon wanting to eat them.

Attack Name Change: Hone Konbou (Bone Club) is changed to Pummel Whack. However, Ogremon doesn’t say it here in the dub. Instead he just grunts again.

Attack Name Change: Shishi Omaru (or Shishiou-maru, depending on the source) (Lion King Sword…Simba? :0) Is changed to Beast Sword, even though, again, he doesn’t say it here in the dub he just grunts.

So is the rule just that if a Digimon evolves once, no matter the circumstance, they can easily perform it again later?

Devimon originally just says that dealing with six of them together is troublesome. In the dub, he says they’ve ‘learned the secret of teamwork’ which is an eyeroll worthy line if I’ve ever heard one. He says that dealing with them all together is more difficult that he realized then asks himself why Patamon hasn’t Digivolved.

Jo points out the rockslide that occurs while Joe calls it an avalanche. Joe, rocks for rockslide, snow for avalanche. Okay?

Mimi originally says she sick of this. In the dub, she says she needs a facial.

Guess Sora’s back to calling Biyomon, Biyo, which still sounds wrong to me.

Dub!Gabumon: “Do you think that avalanche knocked them both off the cliff?” It’s a rockslide. The original keeps getting it right, what’s wrong with you guys?

Jo originally cheers at the fact that Ogremon and Leomon probably died from falling off the cliff. In the dub, he just explains how flying monsters, even ones without wings can be possible in this world because anything seems like it’s possible.

I actually prefer the dub because, while I understand that they were attacked by him, Gabumon and Patamon both said that Leomon was supposed to be a very kindhearted and gentle leader type of Digimon. The fact that he attacked them and paired up with his mortal enemy are huge indications that he’s being controlled like the other nice Digimon have been with the Black Gears. Yet instead of mourning the death of a good Digimon, they cheer for it.

Tai: “It’s that avalanche.” ROCK—Oh forget it.

The explanation of how the rock-avalanche occurred is basically the same, but Koushiro originally surmises that the destruction of the path may have caused instability in the rocks above whereas dub Izzy just says stress fractures in rock eventually occur.

Jo originally hopes there are other humans in the mansion whereas Joe hopes for a hot tub but not one that is too hot.

Yamato’s originally the one trying to stop Jo from barging into the building. In the dub, Tai’s trying to stop both of them.

You can’t hear Jo and Yamato talking in the original as Taichi and Agumon are talking about whether or not the mansion was on the map over the shot. In the dub, their conversation is broken by Matt telling Joe to open the door, but Joe doesn’t want to go in without knocking.

I love Jo/Joe’s flawless logic. ‘But guys there can’t be any bad Digimon in a building that has paintings of angels! That’s, like, against the law or something!’

Tentomon says being able to eat delicious food like that must be a sin (Wait, they know what sin is but not angels?) In the dub, Mimi is speaking on this shot saying that they have awful table manners.

I love the song cue in the original after Jo starts eating.

The kids mostly just say they’ll eat as we zoom out of the mansion and fast forward to the night. In the dub, Mimi says something about lobster and a maitre d, and TK says something about eating pizza that has peanut butter and pickle toppings…..What is with these kids and gross food choices?

Yamato tells Taichi not to jump into the bathtub while Taichi says it’s been so long since they’ve had an actual bath. In the dub, Matt tells Tai not get his hair wet, and Tai says he thought some bird made a nest on his head.

Immediately after, Koushiro says it’s amazing that the place also had a bathtub (it’s a mansion…it’d be harder to believe it didn’t have a bathtub) and that he can feel the tension draining from him. Tentomon then offers electricity to Koushiro….for some reason, and he politely declines. In the dub, Izzy says warm water is great for removing soil and dead epidermis because Izzy can’t turn it off for a few minutes, and Tentomon says when he gets dirty, he just sheds his skin, but Izzy says that would be difficult for him.

Ah, we have a scene deletion!

In the original, Yamato says he can’t forgive guys who are so shy in an all-men’s bath. Taichi agrees so they jump out of the bath, while naked, and try to grab Jo’s towel from him. This scene is basically kept the same, but the shot of Yamato and Taichi and their bare asses as well as trying to get Jo’s towel from him are removed.

Since this is removed, the arguing over getting Jo’s towel is also removed from the shot of Gabumon outside of the bath. Instead, Tentomon asks where Gabumon is and Patamon says he’ll get in eventually but he’s too shy to take off his fur. I’d say that’s even more understandable in the original if Taichi and Yamato might possibly take his fur off by force. 0-o

DIGIMONSDCEP8SCREEN3

Wow, another scene deletion!…Only reason I get excited over these is because dialogue edits are sometimes a pain…

Anyway, after the girls discover Gomamon in the girls’ bath, Palmon throws him over to the boys’ side where he lands on Jo’s head and we see a shot of them both on the ground with Jo also now naked. All of this is kept the same, but the shot of them on the ground and also Jo’s naked ass are removed.

DIGIMONSDCEP8SCREEN4

Most of the dialogue when they find the beds is passable, but Mimi says that having all of the beds in one room makes it feel like summer camp. Jo then pipes up asking what she means because they were supposed to be at summer camp anyway, but then he trails off at the group’s sad faces because he reminded them of home. In the dub, Joe complains about all the crap they dealt with outside like hiking and starving, which I suppose reminds everyone that they’re far from home.

I guess I can forgive this one because it’s more blatant potty (literally) humor, but when Agumon’s on the toilet he talks about how he can’t poop despite the fact that he ate so much. Taichi wants to leave because he’s taking too long, so Agumon tries his hardest to go and just ends up farting a lot which causes Ogremon to flee the stall that he was hiding in due to the stench. In the dub, it’s kinda the same but they mostly talk about how Agumon was afraid to go to the bathroom by himself and any real mention of what he’s doing is reduced to ‘I don’t even want to talk about it.’ The reason Ogremon eventually flees the stall is I guess because Agumon’s insulting him instead of farting.

Leomon keeps repeating that he needs to kill the Chosen Children in the original. In the dub, he keeps repeating that he cannot disobey Devimon.

Taichi asks about the fact that there is supposedly way more to the Digital World beyond File Island. Devimon says it doesn’t matter because the spot in which they stand will be their graves. In the dub, Devimon says they’re the Digidestined sent to save the Digital World from his destruction, and Tai says they were just kids at summer camp sent there by random.

Huh, another scene deletion I guess for violence. Leomon pushes Agumon out of the way and slams Taichi by his neck up against the wall. In the dub, this shot is removed.

DIGIMONSDCEP8SCREEN5
The featured images for this blog entry are going to make people uncomfortable, aren’t they?

Agumon doesn’t explain that the evil from Leomon was purged by the Digivice in the original as it’s pretty damn obvious. Also, the dub proclaims that a Black Gear was driven from Leomon when no gear was present nor was it actually the cause of the mind control. It was Devimon’s own hand.

Next episode, the kids are now separated on different islands made up of the old File Island. Taichi and Yamato end up on frozen wastelands and have to battle ice-based Digimon to continue their journey and reunite with the others.

Digimon Adventure 01 Episode 7 Sub/Dub Comparison

Digimon ep 7 main

Plot: Jo’s at his boiling point as he tries to be smart and safe while the others keep joking about their situation and not taking things seriously. In an effort to protect everyone from the dangers of Infinity Mountain while trying to get a view of the island, Jo takes it upon himself to sneak out and climb the mountain on his own with Gomamon following behind. But when the gentle Unimon gets hit by a Black Gear, both Jo and Gomamon will need to protect everyone.

———————————-

Title Card: Digimon ep 7 title

Title Change: A Roar! Ikkakumon! is changed to Ikkakumon’s Harpoon Torpedo!

Also, that is another awesome title card.

Gomamon isn’t berating Joe for complaining about the cold in the original. It’s also a pretty out of place line since it’s the very first line we get. We don’t hear or see Joe complaining before this so it just seems weird.

Joe: “I’m allergic to fur…” No one brought up fur. Gomamon just said to think warm.

Mimi doesn’t bring up snowmen, nor do the Digimon ask if a snowman is a Digimon from their world. They just keep talking about snowball fights.

In the shot of Takeru, Taichi, Yamato and Koushiro talking, you can’t hear what they’re saying. Jo’s talking over it all about how a massive temperature drop and snow wouldn’t be fun – it’d be a serious situation because it would make it incredibly difficult to make camp. In the dub, you can hear the boys talking and Joe has no dialogue. The boys are also talking about how the snow will all fall on Joe’s head when it happens and they can’t wait to see it.

A pretty significant point here is left out as Jo says he has to protect everyone because he’s the oldest. It reflects that Jo’s not just a stuffy worry wart who can’t relax, but that he’s taken it upon himself to be the one that ensures that everyone stays safe. While it can be argued that he’s a worry wart anyway, in this situation he believes he doesn’t have the luxury of goofing around and not being serious because someone has to be responsible and watch out for the group’s well-being in more ways than one.

They get the next part basically right, but the reason the group can smell the hot spring is because they can smell the sulfur. The dub seems to imply that they can smell the steam, which doesn’t really make sense.

Jo originally points out that everyone’s cheerful yet he can’t be because he holds the responsibility. In the dub, he talks about how it would be big trouble if these eggs got them sick because there’s no doctor around.

Yamato says the eggs would go great with soft rice and everyone agrees. In the dub, he says the eggs would go great with ketchup, and, while TK agrees with that sentiment, Sora says it sounds gross. I guess eggs with ketchup is more American than rice.

I have to wonder what kind of eggs those are. There are no chickens in the Digital World, are there?

Despite the fact that Matt says he liked ketchup on his eggs, he later requests salsa (That’s a thing too?) In the original, Yamato says he’d like mayonnaise on his eggs, which, while maybe sounding weird, isn’t that odd considering egg salad and deviled eggs.

Sora says she likes sauce on hers (what sauce, I don’t know.) In the dub, Sora just responds to Matt’s comment about salsa.

Koushiro says he likes his eggs with ponzu on them, which is basically citrus fruit juice. In the dub, while they could’ve said something like lemon or orange juice, they decided to have him say—wait for it……Mustard and jellybeans….Okay, the ponzu stuff was a little gross but quirky. Mustard and jellybeans? Just…why?! Why would ever even think to try that?!

Takeru also originally agrees with Taichi and the others that saying the ponzu stuff is weird whereas TK says it sounds good.

Mimi says their suggestions are weird then follows it up by saying she likes her eggs topped with sugar and maybe some natto (fermented soy beans)….Dub!Mimi says she likes them covered in maple syrup and cherries. Ya know, I’m gonna have to side with Joe here, what is wrong with just salt and pepper? I mean, ketchup’s okay, and I really like cheese on them, but a lot of these suggestions are just gross. I understand that’s sorta the joke, but ew.

The group also responds to Mimi’s favorite with disgust, but in the dub TK, while looking grossed out and covering his mouth with his hands, mind you, says it probably tastes good.

Jo originally says that the Japanese culture is falling apart due to, yes, their bizarre egg preferences. Joe leaves this out.

Jo doesn’t mention anything about Yamato squeezing his arm like Joe does. And he barely touched Joe so I dunno what that was about.

Sora’s the one who explains why Taichi wants to climb Infinity Mountain in the original over a shot of Taichi arguing with Yamato. In the dub, Tai’s the one saying it. The same happens with Yamato.

Yamato says that he’s not going to let Taichi’s recklessness get them into danger. In the dub, Matt tells Tai to put his fists down when he talks to him and says Tai keeps trying to bully himself into being leader.

Jo doesn’t mention anything about being good at climbing in the original, he just says he has to be the one to climb Infinity Mountain.

Gomamon claims Joe’s not being honest with himself (which could be a poke at his future crest since it’s Honesty in the original) and says he was really scared of going up there alone because he felt he might be helpless.

In the dub, Gomamon says under his breath that he sometimes has to trick Joe (in reference to saying he’s not following Joe, he has stuff to do on Infinity Mountain.) Joe asks if he said something and Gomamon says he was saying it’s a nice night for a walk. Joe tells Gomamon he’s crazy, and Gomamon replies that that’s okay because he has more fun that way.

Jo originally says that he doesn’t quite trust Gomamon on Unimon being a nice and gentle Digimon since similar information like that has been wrong in the past, and Gomamon doesn’t deny this. In the dub, they skip these lines and go straight to saying that the stream must be Unimon’s watering hole and that he’s coming down for a drink.

Also:

Gomamon: *as Unimon’s drinking* “I told you he was a nice Digimon. He wouldn’t hurt a fly.” Yes because drinking water…means you’re nice?

Unimon’s dub voice ruins his whole majestic image, in my opinion….He has no voice in the original, just horse noises.

Attack Name Change: Holy Shot is changed to Aerial Attack. I like the original better.

Greymon originally just says nothing and gets up when Tai asks if he’s okay. In the dub….he responds by saying “I’m stylin’, dude!”…….Uggggghhhh.

Another post-evolution song gone.

Attack Name Change: Harpoon Vulcan is changed to Harpoon Torpedo.

Tai: “Wow, Joe, you were pretty jammin’ out there!” Stop it!

Yay they did it! They made it to the peak of Infinity Mountain……Which begs the question why they didn’t think to just take Birdramon before….Or Kabuterimon for that matter. The big fight was about it being dangerous to make the climb, but if they could bypass the climb by flying, which Taichi and Sora did, then….what was the point of the argument? I guess the real point was that no one was sitting down and thinking about it, but still that’s pretty damn obvious.

The big revelation on top of the mountain was supposed to be that the ocean was so vast and you could see nothing as far as the eye could see. While the dub does basically say the same thing, they don’t act like this is some drastic revelation like the original, they just brush it off.

Next up is a bunch of debuts; Leomon, Ogremon and the big baddie for this part of the season, Devimon. This is also the part where the kids get separated from each other. Things are really getting interesting now!

Digimon Adventure 01 Episode 4 Sub/Dub Comparison

Ow! This fire is hurting me, a Digimon made of fire, for some reason!

Plot: The group stumbles upon a village of Pyokomon (Piyomon’s pre-evolved form) when an enraged fire Digimon called Meramon attacks. Sora and Piyomon team up to get Piyomon to evolve to Birdramon in order to take him down.

————————————

Title Change: Red Hot! Birdramon! is changed to Biyomon Gets Fire Power!

Title Screen:

Izzy and his alien theories, this time about the Black Gears.

Takeru originally hurts his foot/ankle slightly after tripping. The group tells him that he doesn’t have to act like he’s not hurting, and Takeru says it does hurt a little. Patamon then has a delayed reaction to what happened and asks Takeru if he’s okay. The group says it’s a bit late to ask that now.

In the dub, Tai says to TK that he should be careful because the root that he tripped over could’ve been a snake or something. He apologizes and asks if there really are snakes and stuff around. Piyomon says no, just giant monsters and stuff. Patamon then proclaims he’ll protect TK from the monsters.

Taichi originally says that they have no idea where to go. Piyomon nuzzles Sora and says she’ll go anywhere as long as Sora’s there. In the dub, Tai says they should look for signs of intelligent life and Biyomon nuzzles Sora (which seems very out of place considering the line change) and asks if Tai’s insinuating that Digimon aren’t intelligent.

Sora says that even if Piyomon is 100 percent happy, she’ll still be miserable if they get lost and she’ll be held responsible. Piyomon then asks “100 percent?” and what she means by being held responsible. Sora just staves her off of the answers while the others walk away.

In the dub, Sora basically tells Biyomon that Tai didn’t mean to say Digimon weren’t intelligent, but that they need to get out of there and stick together. She then adds that they’ll end up getting left behind because of their talking, which is rude in both versions.

Jo says as they’re walking that Piyomon is a very sociable Digimon. Koushiro then points out that it seems like each Digimon has their own personality. Piyomon holds Sora’s hand and calls Sora’s name kinda like a child calling for attention from its mother. Sora then asks herself in thought if she can really get along with such a mushy Digimon.

In the dub, Matt basically jokes around saying “Next stop on our tour is the forest of irrelevant road signs.” which is pretty funny considering they are surrounded by irrelevant road signs. Biyomon can’t be heard, and Sora thinks to herself that she can’t believe they’re making jokes when they’re so lost.

Izzy: “Look! It’s the alien saucer again!”

Matt: “And it’s headed for a close encounter!”

This scene is originally silent – we’re not even sure if the kids see the gear in the original. Also, points off for more aliens, points off for dated reference.

As they’re walking through the desert with the telephone poles, Koushiro says this is like a documentary that he saw on the African Savannah. Then they discuss seeing stuff like lions and giraffes, but then turn around and say that there are only Digimon there. They say that they have to find other people because there simply has to be other people there. Then Koushiro says that these telephone poles could end up like the phone booths and the trolley and seem like proof of human existence, but are really traps or fake.

In the dub, they mostly just complain about how hot it is and Sora points out that the telephone poles don’t have connecting wires. Mimi then asks if they remember the phone booths and the trolley car just to see if anyone else remembered them…..Okay, none of that scene had any point whatsoever in the dub. Like, at all. In the least. The whole thing about the wires not connecting doesn’t even have any credence…..Granted most of the original conversation is pointless too, but the dub just seems to go in circles.

Also:

Izzy: “I wonder if these even are telephone poles. Maybe they’re some sort of odd alien equivalent.” God, shut the hell up, Izzy. I can’t wait until you stop this alien nonsense. Even tin-foil-hatters don’t babble about aliens as much as you seem to.

Jo originally yells that they have to find other humans, there’s no other choice. Then Tentomon tells Koushiro that he’s serious – there are no other beings besides Digimon there. In the dub, Joe yells out that they’re doomed because the heat has cooked their brains, and Tentomon tells Izzy that they need to find Joe some shade fast.

Mimi basically teases that she either found a new compass or fixed the one that she had. In the dub, Mimi says the numbers melted off of her favorite watch….and I guess that somehow turned it into a compass? Either Mimi’s being insanely cheeky or she’s brain dead.

Piyomon starts annoying Sora by constantly calling her name and saying things to her, to which she responds by saying she’s tired and hot and to just stop clinging to her. In response to this, Piyomon apologizes and backs away from her. Sora responds that it’s fine and she can walk with her. Piyomon cheers and runs to her, telling her that she loves her.

In the dub, Matt says TK’s socks reek, and Mimi says she could use a snack bar while Biyomon stops and says she’s too tired to go on. Sora responds by saying that they have to think positive and maybe imagine that it’s raining, which perks Biyomon up and she cheers while saying that she loves the rain.

These scenes with Piyomon being too clingy seem to have meaning behind them if you’ve watched the entire series. Sora’s crest is the Crest of Love and she initially doesn’t believe that she deserves such a crest because she thinks she’s not loving. These scenes with a clingy and lovable Piyomon giving Sora gobs of attention may be poking to her issues on that subject, hence why she’s so avoidant of that behavior. Since these scenes are removed from the dub in lieu of something else, we lose this bit of foreshadowing; if it is that at all.

When the group reaches the Pyokomon village, Mimi says it reminds her of a fairy tale that she read when she was younger. Yamato then says that they thought they’d be able to spend the night there, but considering the size of the village it seems impossible. Koushiro says that they can’t even fit into their houses.

In the dub, Mimi says she’d like to take one of the Pyokomon home and treat it like a stuffed animal, to which Matt replies that Mimi doesn’t seem to hear the same things that they do, and Izzy surmises that she might be….*sigh* an alien spy. They really are mean to Mimi in the dub. She is dumb, but it’s like the dub writers specifically made her much dumber and made the others like to poke fun at her much more.

In the original, Piyomon ends her sentence with ‘no yo’ which roughly translates to ‘ya know?’ and the Pyokomon ask her why she’s talking like that. She says it’s because she’s been spending so much time with Sora (even though it’s only been like two days) and that she learns a lot from her.

In the dub, she talks normally, yet the Yokomon are acting like she’s speaking differently from the Yokomon, which she really isn’t barring maybe being a little more comfortable speaking. The scene plays out the same though.

Takeru doesn’t point out that Mt. Miharashi is an active volcano in the original, he just looks at the mountain. Not even sure how TK would know that’s an active volcano.

In the original, the Pyokomon are the ones who tell the kids that they saw something crash into Mt. Miharashi earlier and they deduce that it was the Black Gear. In the dub, since they seemingly saw the crash, they figure it out on their own.

The song cue for Meramon is awesome. In the dub it’s just generic ‘trouble’ music.

Originally, the kids and the Digimon are just frozen in terror and they don’t say anything until they start reacting. In the dub, Sora is telling them all not to move, which makes no sense. What could standing still possibly benefit you? Is his vision based on movement? Meramon is not a T-Rex, Sora.

There really didn’t appear to be friggin’ millions of Pyokomon at that village, but geez there’s a lot of them when they reach the ship.

Sora doesn’t call Biyomon ‘Biyo’ (or I guess she’d be called Piyo) in the original…which is good because it kinda sounds like you’re calling her ‘B.O.’ and it’s not nice to say your Digimon stinks, Sora.

Attack Name Change: Burning Fist, Meramon’s attack, is changed to Fireball, which sounds less cool but makes more sense since it is a fireball and not like a fire punch.

Another vocal song after Piyomon evolves is removed in lieu of the same action Digimon dub music.

Meteor Wing, Birdramon’s attack, actually didn’t get changed for the dub, but for some reason they don’t say the name of her attack here.

Also, what’s the logistics of this fight? Everyone else is attacking him with air, fire and electricity and it only made him grow more powerful, but an Adult/Champion fire attack gets rid of the Black Gear? How?

Sora also never calls Biyomon ‘Bee’ (Or, I guess, in the case of the Japanese name, Pee?) in the original.

Piyomon actually tells Sora that she loves her in the original. In the dub, she just says “because…you know” Biyomon shouldn’t be that bashful.

Also, I think they repeat the shot of them hugging for no reason.

Jo says that the bird food or whatever that stuff is isn’t that bad if your chew it enough. In the dub, Joe says he’ll pass on the meal.

Next up is Kabuterimon’s debut and I actually remember that episode being kinda hokey, so let’s see.
