The Salty Anime Challenge Day 17: An Anime You Have No Desire to Watch, Even Though It’s Popular

I’m not sure how popular this is exactly, but it’s a shounen jump anime and it’s on Toonami, so my money’s on quite popular. This was also basically the only one I could think of. Black Clover.

I have nothing against it – I just have no desire to watch it. It looks like someone mixed Fairy Tail with the art style of Berserk…..And that’s not appealing to me, despite liking both.

When it comes to shounen jump anime, I tend to have a soft spot for them. They can be a lot of fun mixed with fantastic action and memorable characters. I basically have the same soft spot for them as I do shounen gaming anime or magical girl shows. I even really like Fairy Tail, even though many people have said that’s one of the weaker shounen jump fantasy series to come out recently.

Sitting down and reading the full synopsis and seeing bits and pieces on advertisements, I have no interest. Orphans….magic powers….oh great, one of the characters is a prodigy. I totally missed talking about that on my least favorite trope entry…..They’re….working to become…Wizard King? Okay now you’re mixing Fairy Berserk with One Piece.

I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I just have no desire to watch it.

My lack of interest probably stems from my increasing maturity and refinement as an anime watcher. I need more…substance, intellectualism….and….deep….feelings of…emotion in my anime. These fantasy tales designed for small human mammals just aren’t enough for me anymore.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go watch Hamtaro.

  1. Hamtaro is amazing!

I like Black Clover, but it actually gets a lot of hate in the anime community for being generic and copying other popular shounen titles. Even though you won’t watch it, I do feel like it’s only right that I include this video so you can see one of the reasons why people hate on the show.

I find it kind of endearing and I’ve become use to it. If you watch the show long enough you’ll become numb to this too. lol

    • Fistbump for the Ham-ham. ❤

I wouldn't say I adamantly won't watch it – it might be one of those shows I'll watch in passing if I see it on TV, I just have no desire to actively pursue watching it. Especially if it's one of those shows that will last 100+ episodes. That's a mighty commitment.

I thought yelling a lot was just a shounen protagonist thing to do lol Naruto, Luffy, Goku etc. They all yell a lot. I've long since grown accustomed to that. It doesn't bother me.

I will admit that Asta's voice is slightly more annoying than usual due to that weird gargle thing he seems to do when he yells. Still, I can tune that stuff out.

  2. Asta screaming is definitely one reason to skip the show. Of the 13 episodes I watched, I muted two of them just to finish it for review purposes because I couldn’t physically handle listening to Asta anymore.

    • Wow, that bad, huh? I didn’t realize it when I first watched the video FuelS posted but after watching a second time, is that all in one episode? Yeah, I can definitely see how that’d get to be overkill after a few episodes. Shounen protagonists yell a lot (DBZ is practically known for it) and I’m used to that but they usually don’t drown the episode in it and do it randomly. I kinda feel bad for Asta’s VA. That garglely noise has to be murder on the throat.

      • I will admit by the end of the first 13 episodes the frequency had reduced, but really it was painful to watch and listen to. I get that screaming and shouting are a shounen staple, but there has to be some kind of moderation on it.

  3. Yeah, Black Clover looks like a generic Shonen Jump fantasy show to me, so I’d pass on it, too.

Some popular anime I have no interest in seeing would be Kill La Kill, Attack on Titan (Yeah, I said it!), Darling in the Franxx, Demon Slayer, and the Kino’s Journey remake.
